Former President Obama joined a Zoom call with Texas state House Democrats on Thursday, calling the Republican redistricting effort in the state a “systematic assault on democracy.”

“What we all recognize is we can’t let a systematic assault on democracy just happen and stand by,” Obama said.

“And my hope is that rather than have a race to the bottom where every district is predetermined based on how it’s drawn, that over time, the American people, ideally with the help of the courts, realizes that there’s a better way,” he continued.

Texas Democratic state lawmakers fled the Lone Star State two weeks ago to break quorum and prevent a vote on a new redistricting map that would give the GOP five additional seats in the 2026 midterms.

Giving those 3 million new people representation in congress increases our democracy.
Obama wants to deny those people representation in congress which decreases our democracy.
Now if Barry is opposed to gerrymandering then he must demand that Democrat states undo their gerrymandering first.

The Texas redistricting plan does not prohibit any Democrat from running for or winning any district. What it did do is remove the Democrats guaranteed seats. They will have to focus on more than the primary election and convince the voters they deserve that seat to get that seat just as all the other candidates do.

It works how the democrats around the nation made it work... if they can redistrict at will so can Texas... now after the threats from CA and NY and Illinois other red states are gearing up to do the same....

Except the Democrats aren't redistricting at will, they do it after the Census, which is when you are supposed to do it.

IN fact, NY lost five easy Dem seats because they complied with a court order to reject their initial map. (And Cuomo didn't do his job.)
