Obama orders government to slash emissions, consume more renewables
19. March 2015 | Global PV markets, Markets & Trends | By: GARRETT HERING
The president will sign an executive order today cutting emissions 40% for the nation's largest energy consumer—the federal government itself.

The order, which calls for the government to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 40% over the next decade from 2008 levels, would save taxpayers up to $18 billion in avoided energy costs, estimates the White House.

President Obama's order increases the federal government’s use of renewable electricity to 30% of its total portfolio by 2025. However, this represents only a modest incremental rise from the federal target created by President George W. Bush under the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which required 20% by 2020.

Obama’s order also requires federal buildings to cut their energy use 2.5% annually by 2025 and increases the size of the government’s electric-vehicle fleet.

As part of the announcement, several big-name government contractors also committed to using more renewable energy and reducing emissions—including Battelle, General Electric, Honeywell, IBM and others.

I think Obama should mandate solar on all federal government buildings.

Better late than never I suppose. Solar should be standard on the tops of all buildings. Windmills too. Got all that wind on highrises to exploit, not doing so is stupid. Dunno if it'd be enough to power the highrise, but every little bit helps.

The number of occupants per square foot of ground space on typical high rises is too large to power such places from the roof. Single family dwellings could come close. And, of course, every bit of load you move off the fossil fuel powered grid helps. Unfortunately, the cost per kilowatt is high (because the output is small) for the size of the installations you could mount on the top of most buildings. Buildings are not designed to take significant additional loads on their roofs. Each floor is designed to hold up the structure above it. If it wasn't built from square one to take a 12 ton wind turbine with large wind loads on the roof, you won't be able to mount one up there. Solar would be easier but the cost is not insignificant.

To the person that said "better late than never": Obama has instituted large alternative energy and energy conservation programs throughout the fedeeral government and the military worldwide. This is most certainly not his administration's first act in this vein.

You are an idiot matthew, the solution is to spend $46 trillion dollars consuming more Solar Panels, destroying miles of earth, burning millions of tons of coal in a short time to increase production of Solar? Your idea is to consume more now, literally more consumption than the World has ever seen? Instead of One Power Plant for a City, every house must have its own power plant and batteries? Like the AAA batteries I need to throw out every week?

Yes, to save the World we must consume, burn, and destroy everything to build Solar panels forever? Yet that is not consumption? That does not increase the use of natural materials?

Every single person on Earth will have to by tons of material now to provide energy for oneself? We must consume more while receiving less?

The great lie continues, its clean, green, and renewable.

For those of you that may be puzzled by Elektra's comments: he believes that constructing renewable energy systems consumes more energy than such facilities will produce in their lifetimes. His justification for such a belief has yet to appear, but there you go.

Once more Obama deserves a one finger wave as he shows that his destructive policies will continue... More money to be thrown at a nonexistent problem... Proving, once again that Liberalism is undeniably a mental disorder..
