Most Conservatives Still Believe The Civil War Wasn't Over Slavery

How could they have written that the Civil War was over slavery when the Civil War was not happening during the time the quotes you've supplied were written?
They seceded for slavery -- they felt losing that right to own slaves was an attack on their way of life -- stop acting coy about how they were willing to go to war over owning slaves. The common argument I keep hearing from these slavery apologists is that slaves should have just been more patient and maybe in 40 or 50 years slavery would have ended naturally

So you tell me -- how long should those slaves have waited to be allowed to live as free men? Escaping to the North wasn't always the option since we had that Fugitive slave act -- so tell me -- how long would you have waited to not be raped, murdered and tortured?

Its always convenient for the demographic who wasn't historically enslaved to tell those who were how they should have been patient or how the plight of their ancestors wasn't that bad

Lincoln wanted blacks to go back to Africa. The vast majority of Northerners considered blacks inferior. The motto of the north was "Save the union" and as Bootney accurately pointed out the whole slavery thing came up 2 years into the war.

No amount of facts are going to phase you, are they?

Cool...so basically your point is that Lincoln didn't give a **** about slaves either? got it.
He gave a **** about slaves.

He just didn’t care too much about what happened to freed blacks.

Lincoln only cared about preseving the nation

Then why did he work so hard to get the 13th amendment passed?

While I agree with your literal answer, you missed his point that the life of poor whites was pretty bad as well, and they didn't have a lot of motivation to go fight a war to free blacks since their lives weren't much better
Yes, their motivation was scripted and shaped by their own wealth class -- fight to maintain your way of life -- the Feds are trying to tell you how to live -- they are trying to give the inferior black man more rights than you --

the same script todays racists feed their flock -- and it still results in those folks voting against their own interests if they think it hurts those darkies.

[I bet you another one of those stupid crackas that think Obamacare is just like slavery.

Indeed it is. Anything in which low IQ folks like Blacks and Hispanics get FREE medical care with no monthly insurance cost while, high IQ folks have to pay a substantial amount that actually has a deductible is indeed slavery. People working for other people is slavery, you ridiculous nerd!

White people who were barely making a living really were desperate to shoot each other over Black folks who got free room and board and could **** all they wanted. :p
Yup, that is all slavery was -- living for free and having sex all the time.

Spoken like a true idiot...

I bet you another one of those stupid crackas that think Obamacare is just like slavery.

Poor whites had one thing to fight for

Blacks were below them. No matter how bad their lives were, they were still better than a black

The Civil War was fought over several issues, slavery being one but not the main one. More over state's rights.

A very small percentage of Southerners owned slaves.

If the South truly believed in state's rights then the underground railroad would have terminated at the Mason-Dixon Line instead of extending all the way to Canada.

Since you love quotes so much, find for us the quote from Abraham Lincoln saying that he was fighting the Civil War to free the slaves. This would have to be a quote from before the Emancipation Proclamation, obviously.

I already said that Lincoln didn't care about black people -- So whenever republicans talk about how they were the party of Lincoln and how he freed the slaves -- you agree that we can all look at them with this face??

Republicans did work hard

No matter how you spin it, though, the war was fought over slavery.

A myth repeated a thousand times is still a myth. The "spin" is to repeat the myth that the war was fought over slavery. Secession was mainly over slavery, but secession and the war were two very different events.

Was the War of Independence fought over "taxation without representation"? No, of course not. It was fought over American independence, because the British would not allow the American colonies to leave in peace. If there had been no British invasion, there would have been no war. And if there had been no federal invasion, there would have been no Civil War.
The cause of the Civil War was always slavery
The south seceded in order to preserve the institution in perpetuity.

The Confederacy was formed in order to preserve slavery

:aug08_031:

You think the southern wealth class raised the a white southern army to free the slaves. That's what you just literally argued.

Want to re-read more carefully this time and try again?

Civil War still divides Americans

So after 150 years, the majority of conservatives still believe the Civil War wasn't over slavery?

Why is this? Why do they believe the "States Rights" claim is sufficient enough to shield them from the fact that -- those states rights were those states preserving the right to maintain slavery -- so either way you slice it, the civil war was over slavery --

This is why whenever I see a conservative twisting themselves into pretzels to claim otherwise --- it makes their subsequent claims of not being racist look foolish.

Next time conservatives want to pretend that the Civil War wasn't over slavery -- they better travel back in time and tell all of those southern states to stop telling everyone it was over slavery
Hilarious
Ya and the dems liked slavery, started the kkk, and hung anyone who disagreed with em
And you’re arguing over a philosophical idea about the war
This has too be one of the most asinine post I’ve ever seen

This was before the parties switched sides. So you're saying that democrats don't care about black people. OK Thanks for that

Slavery was a part of the Civil War but States Rights was the real reason the Civil war was fought.

Not many Southerners owned slaves you idiot.

States Rights was the biggest concern.

Let’s look at it this way. The Confederacy was 4 million slaves and 5 million free whites. 40 percent of the population was in bondage
Even if you did not own slaves, you still benefitted from the slave economy.
At the heart of the matter it centered on institutional racism. Poor whites did not want to have to compete with free blacks
