The Secession was about slavery. And the war started when South Carolina attacked U.S. Army troops to protect secession.

So the Confederacy did go to war to protect slavery- even if the Union did not go to war to end slavery.

For the slave owners it may have been but for those who didn't own slaves it had to be something else. My Great, Great grandfather fought with the 57st Alabama Infantry Regiment and he did not own slaves.

We didn't want the slaves freed. We didn't want to compete with them for scarce resources in substance farming. We didn't want 3 million of them running loose. We also didn't want tariffs, or a majority of senators from non-slave states that had industrial and pro-immigrant (westward expansion) interests that conflicted with our economic interests.

Who is this "We" stuff?

The Confederacy was created as a haven for slavery. If you fought for the Confederacy, you were fighting to preserve slavery

That's not what Honest Abe said when he started the war. Link said it was to keep the union together, not to free the slaves. In fact, he didn't free the slaves in rebel states until 1863 and slaves in the union weren't freed until after the war was over.
