The student who default on their loans should have any of their educational credentials revoked.

If you get a car or home loan, and cannot afford to repay the loan the bank REPOSSESSES or FORECLOSES on the unpaid asset.

It should not be any different for education. It is also a commodity with a value.

So, even if it were hypothetically possible to revoke a degree, how would a school have any authority to do so simply because a person defaulted on a private contract with a third party that's not part of the school?

When you buy a car the finance company has a recorded lien that allows them to reposess, as the property has residual resale value allowing them to auction it to offset the defaulted debt. You can't remove an education from someone's brain, and a degree has no residual resale value, so it's hypothetical "repossession" would be purely punitive which the law does not allow.

How hard is it to bribe someone working at the University to give someone a fake transcript? A lot of jobs that require a degree don't care what the degree is in.

I heard of someone who was doing excellent work, but he had lied about having a degree. When it came time that he had to produce a transcript and he didn't have one, the bosses fired him. How stupid is that? There's nothing wrong with lying about something irrelevant, which was obviously true in this case.
