That's how it was on the old days. 2020 changed EVERYTHING. the world doesn't trust democrats anymore when it comes to elections. Methinks you need a brush up on how it works. There are primaries and voters vote for the nominee they want. The party convention is just a formality to formally announce who the voters had voted for, even though everyone already knows that anyway.

The polls are based on general popularity, but a smart candidate realized we have an electoral college instead, so they campaign in all the small states and not the big ones like CA and NY.
Hillary just goofed and went with only the big states because they had more people.
