This. I got threatened with a write- up for working into the lunch hour. I was on a finish pass, I had about 10 minutes before I could get out of the cut. I was supposed to just stop the machine and let is dwell. No way I was going to do that- it would have left a line on the part that would have to be finessed out later. Plus, this was a high-fatigue part that got replaced on hours because it was critical to flight safety.
I had 4 of them on the table, they were about 60K ea. I was not going to do anything that would remotely compromise the parts. I finished the cut and came back from lunch 10 minutes late.
I was not supposed to clear the chips off the table or sweep the floor around the machine. When they piled up, I was supposed to stop the machine and call a sweeper. I said hell with that, I can clear chips while the machine is running. I know when it's safe to turn away for a moment, and I know when I have to have my finger on the hold button- and I know how long I have between those times, and I can tell by the vibrations of the machine if the cutters are happy.
I was hired as a journeyman, and I used my best judgement as the owner would want me to. He was my employer, not the union.
