A tuition-free education is an investment in our nation's future. They will pay back what they received from society, by being productive and serving their country as a member of its workforce. Without them, you wouldn't be able to buy anything with your Social Security money. They produce the products and services that we buy with our pensions.

Nothing in life is free, but your parents still fed you and changed your diapers. Nothing in life is free, but capitalists get grants and subsidies to help them compete in foreign markets. Nothing in life is free, but your Social Security checks and Medicare have already exceeded the amount of money that you paid into them when you were employed. Wait a minute, I thought the whole student loan forgiveness thing was all about they couldn't afford to pay their loans due to the pandemic and inflation? Now they are saying that they could actually afford to pay their loans after all and expect a windfall if they don't have to pay them back anymore and can then use the "saved" money on something else.

Hubby and I started out well below the poverty line and our kids came early in our marriage. There was no government assistance for us and it wasn't easy, but we worked hard and didn't stay at the bottom for long.

We were middle class but in no way rich when our kids were in school and we helped them as much as we could but they had to do a lot. The kids were in no way 'rich' or even middle class after they completed their college education and they had substantial student loans to pay off.

But pay them off they did while they were building careers and increasing their incomes. They drove older cars and delayed home purchases for awhile, couldn't take expensive vacations, did without some wants but they made it just fine. They are quite affluent and can afford pretty much whatever they want to do now.

That is the way to have a productive society in which people take responsibility for their choices, pay their debts, and contribute to society instead of being a drain on it. And to expect those who do that to pay for instant gratification for those who don't want to do that is unconscionable.

If the reason for forgiving student loan debt is because due to the pandemic and inflation you couldn't afford the payment, then there is no money saved from forgiveness because you couldn't afford the payment in the first place. All of this proves that they actually could afford the payment in the first place, therefore the idea that they couldn't afford the payments was a big fat lie because they could, otherwise they could not redirect the payments to something else if the debt was forgiven.

No the reason for foregiveness is because Biden promised it on the campaign. The COVID emergency just became the way he was able to try to make an end-run around Congressional approval. I thank God I was able to pay mine and my wife's off in lump sums when a pharmacy chain unexpectedly decided it wanted an in over my head money pit I had just bought as to keep a rival chain away as they built across the street from me. I am in the position that our kids will never have to get them. Student loans are like payday loans on crack, especially for women who are in and out of repayment as they are in and out of work having kids. Problem is that one of Biden's other plans--lowering payment formulas--is going to make it a hell of a lot worse for direct loan borrowers in the long run. A little government relief today will come at an huge cost 15-20-25 years down the road for a lot of these kids and until then, they are going to be a dead albatross hanging around the necks of their credit scores.
