Zone1 If Morality Doesn't Come From God Then Where Does It Come From?

This question came up in another topic and I wanted to turn it into a debate because I'm curious what people have to say about this. This question is for atheists and agnostics. How do we know what's right and wrong without the Bible? How does the government decide what's right and wrong without the Bible? Where does morality come from without the Bible?
They come from a number of sources. Some are even innate, the one you mentioned about the Bible is a societal influence source.

Let me ask you all a question. Hypothetically speaking, if the government said that murder and theft are now legal would it suddenly become moral?
No.

If the Bible gives instructions on owning slaves, does slavery become moral?

No. And it took 1000s of years and superior, secular ideas for peole to come to understand slavery is immoral.

First of all, government isn't society and doesn't define morality. Second, it's certainly possible for a society to adopt bad morals - rules that don't actually promote to their success. The proof is in the pudding. If a government legalized murder and theft, I suspect that country wouldn't last long. What do you think?

Sure. But those speaking on the Bible are the much stronger force.

Else the Christian fundies would be stoning women in the streets and beating their slaves.

No, of course not.

But what is legal and what is moral aren't always the same thing.

It was illegal at one time to help slaves escape from bondage, but it was the moral thing to do.

I personally think getting drunk out of your mind is immoral, you are doing harm to yourself and those who care about you.

But I would hardly want to bring back prohibition.

Morality is older than your god. Way older.
How could we have made successful civilizations thousands of years ago without morality?
Exactly! So where did that come from if it didn't come from God?
TNHarley IT decided to selectively answer only a part of your comment?

Why?

What would having dealt with all of it done to IT's brain?

Educational failures are evident

You should read it. It would help you.
Maybe. But I don't do research tasks on command. If one of you trolls has a point, you'll have to actually use your words and make that point. I'm not going on a google safari because you're too lazy to do that.

Okay, but it's one thing to make a point, and quite another to have to remedially teach basic, relevant concepts of a topic just so you can begin discussing it on the level.

It comes from G-d.

Our instincts are only to pursue self interest at the expense of others, violating G-ds Commands.

Good point. I'll stop wasting my time with you. Again. :)
