This question came up in another topic and I wanted to turn it into a debate because I'm curious what people have to say about this. This question is for atheists and agnostics. How do we know what's right and wrong without the Bible? How does the government decide what's right and wrong without the Bible? Where does morality come from without the Bible?
I promised myself I would talk less about religion.
But here goes.
I know what's right and wrong by how I treat my fellow person. It's called "having a sense of empathy". My rough edges here aside (and I know I throw a lot of rhetorical elbows), IRL, I try to treat people the way I would want to be treated. Hell, I'm even polite to telemarketers. Yes, this was a message Jesus had, but it predates him.
I don't need a bible to tell me not to murder someone. I know that would be wrong. That person has people that care about him and (unless they were an immediate threat) they pose no harm to me.
I wouldn't cheat on my wife, not because I would offend some being in the sky, but because it would hurt my wife's feelings.
Conversely, so many truly evil things have been done in history in the name of religion. Crusades, Jihads, Inquisitions, burning witches.
So let's take something you consider evil, homosexuality. I have no desire to have sex with a person of the same gender. It's just not something I'm into. But do I think it's morally wrong? Nope. Some people are just wired differently, and if they aren't hurting anyone, it's really none of my business.
