There is no healthcare system in the world that would not be overwhelmed by something like the Spanish flu, because to permanently maintain the level of resources necessary to battle something we see once in several lifetimes would be a tremendous waste.

There was a lot of hysteria surrounding the disease. Had we stayed calm and realized that the mortality was concentrated among those normally killed off by disease, namely the elderly and those with co-morbidities, we could have more effectively fought it and achieved herd immunity a lot faster.
