Society is only as safe those who are allowed to defend themselves, taking guns away doesn't stop the criminal behavior of people, they will use other means as a recent killing in FRANCE showed when Knives were the weapon used. The reality is that some types of guns are not even the most common choice for murder anyway, from The Federalist:
