Zone1 Have we lost The Bible Story?

For those interested in floods, I recommend studying geology and speaking with knowledgeable geologists.
lol... What a cop out!

If someone is interested in Jesus "calming the storm" should a person consult a weatherman?

No?

If someone is interested in Jesus "raising the dead" should they consult a medical professional?

No?

If someone was interested in "the stars falling from the sky" should they consult an astronomer?

No?

If someone 'hears voices' thinking the're being "tempted by the devil" (like Jesus was) should they consult a psychiatrist?

Yes?

If they want to know how the storms gather in and around the Sea of Galilee, absolutely! It is my understanding that storms can strike unexpectedly in that sea. In the story, the setting is one of these unexpected storms hitting the sea and Jesus and the Apostles were in a boat working its way across the sea. The setting is not the theme (the lesson) of the story. I love this story. Men were tending to the sails, maybe manning some oars, definitely bailing out the water. Can you imagine these dozen men hard at work, and there in a corner one man is sleeping peacefully through all the turmoil and danger. So they wake him up demanding why he doesn't care about the storm and the danger they are in. Jesus seems legitimately puzzled. After all the miracles they had witnessed, how could his Apostles not know that if there was real danger, he would handle it. We return to the teaching, The battle is the Lord's. The Lord is always close by when our world is in turmoil.

At one time I read a story where the author expanded on this Bible story. In his expanded version, one of the the Apostles was telling the story to a new audience, and came to the part where Jesus' calmed the sea. One of his companions added slyly, "And the interior of the boat was miraculously emptied of water as well." The first Apostle gave him a withering look and said, "So speaks one who did not help with the bailing."

OK.

Don't you know any fishermen? The disciples seasoned fishermen weren't afraid of the weather.

The gathering storm clouds represent crowds of people gathering because Jesus was pissing people off everywhere they went. The disciples weren't afraid of the weather, they were afraid of being lynched like Elijah was 'taken up' into heaven by a whirlwind, a euphemism for him being killed by a mob. Or do you think that a tornado sucked him off up into the sky without him dying?

Or is it to you a "mystery" too deep for the human mind to comprehend so you just believe?

In what? ugh.

Maybe you should consult the Rambam and his clear teaching on "the language of the prophets"

I get that from you.

As far as Elijah and some other Biblical miracles, I am content with it ultimately remaining a mystery. Those of us who have experienced miracles find it impossible to dismiss the miracles in other times and other lives. This does not mean I don't contemplate other possibilities...it means I don't fail to contemplate the miracles, either.

I get that from you. But I have one question. How is it even possible to believe in something you don't understand and can't explain rationally? Seriously, if its all a mystery what do you believe?

Isn't your faith based on pretense? If you don't understand something all you can do is pretend.

Isn't comprehension the highest aim? Isn't knowing he who truly is God eternal life as Jesus said? How can you know God if you understand neither scripture nor the power of God and think that Jesus literally controlled the weather, heard voices, raised the dead, cleansed lepers, healed the sick, cured the paralyzed, magically fed a multitude, ascended into the sky, and defied actual reality with what in your unrestrained imagination "just believe" are supernatural miracles?

What about feeding the multitude fish sandwiches? Do you want to know what really happened?

The Sea of Galilee is the lowest freshwater lake on earth at approximately 210 m (700 ft) below sea level. It is longer than it is wide. At its widest points, the lake measures 21 km (13 mi) from north to south and 12 km (7.5 mi) from east to west and is surrounded by hills. The elevation, shape and contour of the lake make it susceptible to storms. Violent storms do "roll" in there suddenly. They even have a name for it. They are called Sharkias.

"...Such storms result from differences in temperatures between the seacoast and the mountains beyond. The Sea of Galilee lies 680 feet below sea level. It is bounded by hills, especially on the east side where they reach 2000 feet high. These heights are a source of cool, dry air. In contrast, directly around the sea, the climate is semi-tropical with warm, moist air. The large difference in height between surrounding land and the sea causes large temperature and pressure changes. This results in strong winds dropping to the sea, funneling through the hills. The Sea of Galilee is small, and these winds may descend directly to the center of the lake with violent results. When the contrasting air masses meet, a storm can arise quickly and without warning. Small boats caught out on the sea are in immediate danger..."

So your "belief" is that Jesus controlled the weather? lol. He must really be pissed off at Texas.

Right now I'm just correcting your idiotic and ignorant response that "seasoned fishermen aren't afraid of weather." You ever been on a small fishing boat with no engine on 12 ft seas?

Sharkia winds are strong, easterly winds that blow from the Golan Heights and the deserts of Jordan onto the Sea of Galilee. The word "sharkia" comes from the Arabic word for "east". These winds are most prevalent from October to May and can cause violent swells on the lake that can reach 10 to 12 feet high.
Sharkia winds can cause damage to property and agriculture, and even loss of life. For example, in 1992, 10 foot waves crashed onto the shores of Tiberias, causing substantial damage.

Jesus was sleeping while the disciples were dealing with "A furious squall". Who sleeps on a small boat in the middle of a "furious squall" with 12ft seas? What does that tell you? Think!

Have you ever been surrounded by a furious mob? Its great. I'd rather be on a raft in a storm.

And you left out the part where Jesus walked on water in the middle of this "furious squall".

And you expect someone to believe that you actually believe that this all happened literally?

How the hell do you live with yourself? Oh, thats right. You are not among the living. Nevermind

What does that tell you? Have you ever been surrounded by an enraged and furious mob? putz.
And you seem to have left out the part where Jesus walked on water in the middle of this storm.

We can get to that as soon as you acknowledge that your saying seasoned fishermen aren't afraid of the weather was a really dumb thing to say. Seasoned fisherman are afraid of the weather. That's how they became seasoned fishermen. Because all of the idiots that weren't afraid of the weather Darwinized themselves out of existence before they could become seasoned.

I didn't say aren't. I said they weren't afraid of the weather. They were afraid of being lynched.

When Mike Pence was shitting his pants while the capitol was being stormed by patriotic [sic] god fearing Jesus loving antisemitic fascist pigs was he afraid, terrified, of the weather? Damn.

15th post
how could his Apostles not know that if there was real danger, he would handle it.

seems their own skin on the line made a difference than coasting on makebelive story telling.

obviously jesus was not afraid.

How many of you are there?
In the context of that post "we" would be you and I. As soon as you acknowledge your error we (as in you and I) can move on. Now do you understand?

WTF. I said that the disciples were not afraid of the weather. They we're afraid of being lynched.

You claimed I said that fishermen aren't of water. This is your error. A pathetic attempt to deflect.

There is no we that has to move on. You need to move on. You were caught being a dick, again.

I'm satisfied.
I'm satisfied you dug a hole you couldn't get out of because you are too prideful to admit your error. If you want to keep digging that's on you.
