Medieval xtians, particularly knights, were struggling with that very same issue. They were sworn to obey G-d but they had to murder people to keep being knights.

So ... when Pope Urban II, on Nov 27th, 1095 gave his famous speech saying death of non-believers was "Deus vult!" -- G-d's will -- it opened up a whole new world of slaughter.
