Interesting as well is that we generally don't need the irrigation supported ag production from that region. Salads are nice but not necessary.They are not "unprecedented". We have always had periodic extreme weather. Nowadays extreme weather effects more people than in the past because there are more people living in area that use to not have people.
Want to know something interesting about the drought in the West? Typically the West has been dry. It has been that way for the last 500 - 600 years or so. However, there was a period of abnormal wetness that started in the 1950s lasted about 40 years. Now it is returning to normal.
