That's a matter of opinion. Bush was able to attract conservative and Evangelical voters. He was not a pretend Republican, and voters knew this. A good portion of conservative and Evangelical voters stayed home on election night in 2012. These are the reasons why...Palin energized the conservative base since McCain was hardly a conservative. No party wins without the base. The Palin bashing served mostly to pleasure the left. Liberals weren't going to vote for McCain over Obama and "moderates" weren't going cancel a vote for McCain due to his VP pick. Who factored in Biden as a decision making deal breaker on the left? Plus Bush was hammered daily for 8 years and the media helped destroy the economy like they do whenever a Republican is in office. I heard daily how it was the worse economy ever and Bush's numbers were much better than Obama's but we only hear how things are going to improve and are looking up.
Romney anti-choice? Sounds like abortion is your litmus test. But Romney said nothing about repealing Roe v Wade. He couldn't if he tried.
And no party wins without the moderate/centralist vote. It's a very fine line to walk.
If one looks at the public perception of the Tea Party, it's more negative than positive by quite a margin*. So going straight far right with a ticket complete with far right candidates isn't going to win any national elections.
Like it or not, the public is more comfortable with a more moderate GOP ala the "GOP Establishment"

A lot of factors went wrong for Mr. Romney. And this is really key. Early on, there was much speculation about whether evangelicals would support Mr. Romney. Number one, Romney was a Mormon which is viewed as a cult within the Christian community. Second, Mr. Romney was the first governor to sign gay marriage into law. Third, Mr. Romney was avidly pro-abortion earlier in the decade and in the decade before that. His conversion didnt come until he was in his 50s and mounting a bid for the presidency. He remained pro-abortion in many circumstances. These amounted to huge problems for the Romney campaign which he never quite addressed.
Well since I consider marriage, including those of straights, a private partnership agreement that the government has no business getting into and pulling the plug rules should be the same at both ends of life I guess i'm not a conservative.

You may be fiscally conservative. Many GOP'ers (especially politicians) are social conservatives. Then there is someone like Paul Ryan who's both fiscally and socially conservative.So, either the GOP is not conservative or I'm not.
