The GOP initiated and has been growing into a small tent political party with the hatching of the "Southern Strategy" and then its strengthened plan to grow the GOP even smaller under Reagan. Small tent, small base...it's that simple and the GOP apparatchiks are doing their best to grow the party even smaller in my view. Let the vote be taken by the influx of money and other sources of power from here onward!
The Democratic side of the ledger is only slightly better off IMHO. But I believe they might have longer Darwinian legs than the competing GOP; and make no mistake, the two are competing factions after the same brass rings. The difference obviously being the ability of one to be much more capable of introspection and adjustment for the sake of relevance and survival than the other. Prime examples of that can be found in the GOP's 2012 election postmortem and how the findings have been, for the most part, ignored, and the mistakes repeated with a vengeance since then and with emphasis through this election cycle.
Things cultural and technological have changed dramatically in the last two decades. That alone doesn't bode well for the apparently struggling, worn-out two-party system that is besieged and plagued by it own intransigence to hang on as a viable political contrivance/scheme in the 21st century. The intra-party schisms will become even wider with time and well might play out to a large extent within the next 12 months with some defining restructuring and a paradigm shift in basic philosophical concepts espoused along with a splintering of factions.
