Ex-U.S. Arms Hunter Kay Says No Stockpiles in Iraq

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - David Kay, who stepped down as leader of the U.S. hunt for weapons of mass destruction, said on Friday he does not believe there were any large stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons in Iraq (news - web sites).

"I don't think they existed," Kay told Reuters in a telephone interview. "What everyone was talking about is stockpiles produced after the end of the last (1991) Gulf War (news - web sites) and I don't think there was a large-scale production program in the '90s," he said.

Kay said he believes most of what is going to be found in the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq has been found and that the hunt will become more difficult once America turns over governing the country to the Iraqis.

The United States went to war against Baghdad last year citing a threat from Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. No actual banned arms have been found.

Although there aren't any WMDs, at least there are dozens of weapons programs, or at least thats what Bush thinks the arcade game "Asteroids" is that they found in Iraq.

There are no weapons of mass destruction because there never WERE any. The only thing that ever existed was a threat to Israel. That's why we went to war.

Then there was the issue of the worlds second largest proven oil reserves. Also, radical elements in Saudi Arabia, and other Arab states where growing increasingly vocal about the presence of US troops on Saudi soil. Problem solved, thay're all in Iraq now.

Damn, you 2 still whining about WMD?

Aw cummon jim! That was the initial and overarching reason Dubbyuh gave for going to war in Iraq. Now we know it was all a lie. Which, begs the question of "What else has this treacherous little sot lied about?"

No, "we" don't know it was all a lie. You have your theory, and I'll stick with the intel half the world came up with. The intel likely was faulty and that hardly makes what Bush stated a lie.

Your link is funny, looks like it was designed by 13 year olds! I suppose it's the content that counts, but I just find the page hilarious. They should at least spend 10 minutes designing their page if they expect to be taken seriously.

It was designed so that anyone with a 7th grade education, or better, could understand it.

That's awfully nice of them to look out for their constituents. Wouldn't they have been better of presenting their findings like adults instead of spending their time posting funny pictures? At least this reduces some confusion as to why the Dems don't have a hope in hell this year.

Have to agree with JimmyC, it's a very basic group they are appealing to. Having run through each category, the only consistant complaint is he's NOT spending enough on the desired programs and he's increasing the deficit.

Saddam's WMD hidden in Syria, says Iraq survey chief

David Kay, the former head of the coalition's hunt for Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, yesterday claimed that part of Saddam Hussein's secret weapons programme was hidden in Syria.

In an exclusive interview with The Telegraph, Dr Kay, who last week resigned as head of the Iraq Survey Group, said that he had uncovered evidence that unspecified materials had been moved to Syria shortly before last year's war to overthrow Saddam.

"We are not talking about a large stockpile of weapons," he said. "But we know from some of the interrogations of former Iraqi officials that a lot of material went to Syria before the war, including some components of Saddam's WMD programme. Precisely what went to Syria, and what has happened to it, is a major issue that needs to be resolved."

Dr Kay's comments will intensify pressure on President Bashar Assad to clarify the extent of his co-operation with Saddam's regime and details of Syria's WMD programme. Mr Assad has said that Syria was entitled to defend itself by acquiring its own biological and chemical weapons arsenal.

Syria was one of Iraq's main allies in the run-up to the war and hundreds of Iraqi officials - including members of Saddam's family - were given refuge in Damascus after the collapse of the Iraqi dictator's regime. Many of the foreign fighters responsible for conducting terrorist attacks against the coalition are believed to have entered Iraq through Syria.

A Syrian official last night said: "These allegations have been raised many times in the past by Israeli officials, which proves that they are false."

There is a reason. We have experienced the horror of September 11. We have seen that those who hate America are willing to crash airplanes into buildings full of innocent people. Our enemies would be no less willing -- in fact they would be eager -- to use a biological, or chemical, or a nuclear weapon.

Knowing these realities, America must not ignore the threat gathering against us. Facing clear evidence of peril, we cannot wait for the final proof -- the smoking gun -- that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud.

We should constantly be reviewing our policies, constantly be looking at those sanctions to make sure that they are directed toward that purpose. That purpose is every bit as important now as it was ten years ago when we began it. And frankly they have worked. He has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors.
