COVID-19: Facts vs. Panic

Do you have a point?

Imagine that. Three different posters responded to the question, zero of them answered it.

the point of the OP is obvious. that you dims can't get it is understandable.

Aaaaaand yet another post fails to figure out what the point was. I'm thinking the OP was hoping somebody else could find a point in it, as he never came back, except once to demonstrate:

Pogo's First Law of Pointability: If you can't articulate your point --- you never had one.

the point: that this virus is being over hyped by the media

2nd point: that we are not being given all of the facts

3rd point: STFU hoppy

Guess what percentage of China's population has caught the corona virus, even though the virus was undetected for weeks and then was somewhat ignored for several more weeks? Guess? 10%? 5%? 2%? Try 0.0064%. That's a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of 1%. As of yesterday, per the World Health Organization's daily situation report, there were 81,077 corona cases in China, out of 1.35 billion people. Even rounding up, that means that only 0.0064% of China's population has caught the virus, and no one denies that new cases and new deaths in China have dropped dramatically since mid-February, clearly indicating that the virus has begun to run its course in the country.

In the WHO situation report dated today, 3/17/20, we discover that several nations with hundreds of corona cases have had zero deaths. Zero. They include Finland, Israel, and Portugal. We also learn that a number of nations with between 950 and 1,200 corona cases have had only 3 or 4 deaths, such as Norway, Austria, Sweden, Denmark.

In addition, the corona virus does not spread as easily as some people have claimed. In other words, even if you spend considerable time around someone who has the corona virus, this does not mean you will automatically catch it. For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) found that in China only 5-10% of the people who had lived or worked closely with an infected person caught the virus:

"The WHO team found that in China, 5-10% of people living or working closely with an infected person had the disease." (https://www.usatoday.com/…/coronavirus-lessons-…/4961671002/)

Could the 5-10% transmission rate from close prolonged contact partly explain why the total number of corona cases in China, with its 1.3 billion population, still has not exceeded 90K, and why the numbers of new cases and deaths in China have dropped dramatically over the last three weeks?

The WHO daily situation report on the virus is an excellent source of information and a good way to track the viruses growth or decline in various nations. Here's the link to it:

China is Authoritarian state that has taken measures we would not even consider. They’re are more equipped for this situation than we are.

Huh

The left, who are blaming Trump for not shutting down the borders.....

Have NOT ONE EXAMPLE of any democrat, any media source, or any left winger calling for shutting down borders.

Wait, are they all on board with Trump using the American Army to infiltrate that Chinese shithole and panted their pathetic virus there?

Wonder if pogo was told what hypocrisy means. Think she knows how to use google?

Wonder if you're even in smelling distance of the fact that thinking you can diminish my posts by making me "female", belies your own misogyny. But "there's no war on women" amirite?

That's not why I gave you yet another funny. You got that as soon as you dug yourself into that same old hole of pretending despisition of Rump has something to do with "left" and "right" and "dems [sic]", rather than what it's always been about from the beginning, personal character. ANY time some klown tries that ploy they get a Funny.

And I have no doubt that just sailed clean over your head.

Nope, not one example.

When are you losers gonna get back to the collusion impeachment thing?

Now that you are all claiming you were yelling that Trump didn't close the borders fast enough, wondering if you or any of the other dumb left wing women have examples of calling for that.

We were told of this WUHAN virus in the 2nd week of November. We were warned about it. Were you calling for closing our borders to Asia? You must have been.

Was ping pong ball eyes pelosi or any of the loser candidates calling for closing the border in November? December? Show us where they were.

Oh, and when I mean women, all left wingers are women, especially the liberal overly sensitive vegetarian men.

If we're going to over-react and cause a deep recession in the process, perhaps we should do so in response to the virus that has the following traits:

-- You can carry it and infect others for up to four days before you start to experience any symptoms.
-- It can survive on some surfaces for up to 48 hours.
-- Its symptoms include fever, fatigue, sore throat, chills, headaches, muscle pain, and nasal congestion.
-- So far this in this virus's season, it has infected at least 19 million Americans and has *killed* over 10,000 Americans.

I'm talking about the common flu virus. Yes, so far, in this common flu season, over 10,000 Americans have died and we've had over 19 million cases.

Bravo to CNBC for pointing out these facts.

The flu has already killed 10,000 across US as world frets over coronavirus

the point: that this virus is being over hyped by the media
You are objectively wrong about that. The media keeping the country informed while Trump lied has saved lives. So...........anything else?

Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) situation reports

The problem is, I don't believe the Chinese, they lie about everything.

the CDC has estimated (based on weekly influenza surveillance data) that at least 12,000 people have died from influenza between Oct. 1, 2019 through Feb. 1, 2020, and the number of deaths may be as high as 30,000. The CDC also estimates that up to 31 million Americans have caught the flu this season, with 210,000 to 370,000 flu sufferers hospitalized because of the virus.

31 MILLION Americans have caught the Flu - 12,000 have died

COMPARISON:

There are (as of 1 day ago) 194,217 (one hundred ninety-four THOUSAND two hundred seventeen) confirmed cases of COVID-19 WORLD-wide and 7,684 deaths....WORLD-wide.

The United States government (following global governments) just seized control of our daily, every-day lives - by ordering us to shelter in-place, enforcing that in many cases with local / state police and national guard...by shutting down schools, businesses (restaurants, stores, theaters, casinos, bars...hampering voting....causing panicked 'apocalyptic' runs on groceries / supplies leaving shelves emptied....just helped the continuing market crash....just helped reverse all the record-setting gains in economy / job growth / employment ... etc...

...due to less than 7,000 Americans being tested positive for COVID and less than 107 dying from it (31 of those being connected to a single nursing home in Washington State) ....in the midst of a Flu / Influenza season that has already resulted in over 31 million Americans being infected and 12,000 deaths - which has not sparked such fear or life-altering actions taken / imposed...

Just saying....

By the way, the WHO and other scientists have acknowledged that the average age of death from Coronavirus is 79.5 ... WITH other ailments (such as respiratory illnesses or immune deficiencies) also being a factor.

(No doubt COVID-19 is extremely contagious, as it has shown, but doesn't the fact that 31 million Americans having already caught the flu mean we have ALWAYS needed to engage in the precautionary practices of washing our hands thoroughly / regularly, to be careful touching surfaces and then our eyes/noses/mouths when we are out, to use hand sanitizer, try to stay away from sick people.....? Doesn't it show us that the elderly are not just suddenly an 'at risk' group when it comes to ALL contagious viruses, NOT just when it comes to the COVID-19, and need to be especially protected?)

This Is How Many People Die From the Flu Each Year

Coronavirus update: 194,217 cases, 7,864 deaths, COVID-19 clinical trials begin in the U.S.

A new CDC report states that 80% of the COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. are among people 65 and above, and that the death rates for people under 65 range between <0.1% and 1.4%. The report also says that there have been no deaths--zero--among ages 0 to 19 in the U.S. These findings agree substantially with the statistics from China and in fact show somewhat lower death rates for all age groups.

80% of US coronavirus deaths have been among people 65 and older, a new CDC report says — here's what it reveals about the US cases

Death rates by age group in the U.S., per the new CDC report:

85-plus: 10.4%
75-84: 4.3%
65-74: 2.7%
55-64: 1.4%
45-54: 0.5%
20-24: 0.1%
0-19: 0.0 (no deaths)

So if these rates continue to hold, will some states return to sanity and re-open their schools?

The lower U.S. death rates are encouraging. The Chinese death rate for ages 69 and under ranges from <0.01% to 4.6%. Per the CDC report, the U.S. death rate for 69 and under ranges from 0.00% to 2.7%, which means that even if you are, say, 65, you have only a 2.7% chance of dying from the virus, if you catch it. If you are 50 and you catch the virus, you have a 0.5% chance of dying, or a 99.5% chance of not dying. 0.5% is 0.005, or 5 out of 1,000. So, in other words, the odds that you will not die are 995 out of 1,000.
