It's a cycle. I think we are now on the downside of one and about to hit bottom. Over the next 2-5 years, after a few ultra-violent incidents, "We, the People" will start advancing upwards again on a new cycle of growth and reason. It's been that way throughout our history. IMHO, the cycle is over 50-70 years, hence why most people don't recall it since it is longer than most have been alive or will live.

Nice revisionist history. The Robert E. Lee statue was commissioned in 1917. A long time before the Civil Rights movement.
