According the Abraham Lincoln the war was about preserving the Union. Slavery had nothing to do with it. Clearly even if the South hadn't fired upon Fort Sumter (after Lincoln refused to remove Yankee troops from Confederate territory) the North would have launched an invasion in order to preserve the Union.

Yes. The first Bills they brought to the floor were massive railroad welfare Bills, the Homestead Acts to supplement those, and the Tariffs, and not until three or four years later was 'slavery' even an issue. The corruption around the railroads and Homestead Acts was huge.
