I've seen the documentaries on cults and European authoritarian regimes, and the crash and burn is always inevitable. What has always struck me is that many of the followers maintain a clear affection for it/him long after it's/he's gone.

My guess is that most of them will wish it still existed at full strength, and many will lose interest in politics in general. I don't think the number who just come out and say "yeah, I was duped by an obvious con man, and I don't know what I was thinking" will be very high.
