My question was not rhetorical. Would it be safe for a guy wearing a MAGA hat to show up there?

I wouldn’t know. Nobody like that came. As far as I know there were no counter-protesters, and no MAGA hat wearers chanting “Black Lives Matter!” Cops stayed away, but were watching. This was a pretty spontaneous, or at least quickly organized protest, so there were not many “marshalls” providing security. We have seen spontaneous security measures taken in daytime rallies, like the demonstrators who tackled that idiot tearing up the pavement for rocks. They took him and handed him over to the cops, I think in D.C.

When I was young I sometimes served as security at anti-war rallies, and once at a big demonstration against the Klan in D.C. There were often provocateurs we had to deal with, or just undisciplined troublemakers. Cowards would throw rocks from behind peaceful crowds. Sometimes we were attacked by pro-war elements, even tough construction workers — whom I would have preferred to see fighting on our side.

Nobody should want this, just as nobody should support ongoing police murder and persecution of innocent citizens. But most of the country is absolutely calm. Unlike in the 1960s, today there are fortunately many more African-American local leaders, mayors, cops and even police chiefs.

There is too much unreported news of peaceful protests, and black white unity. In this thread I invite everybody to post the often under-reported stories that stand against racism and “looting and shooting” and “military suppression.” Reports of fake news, reports countering conspiracies aimed at inflaming racism, exposing provocateurs — all these are welcome here.

Well, hopefully we are all “ANTIFAscists.” I know what you mean about them not being an “organization,” but they do exist. You are correct Trump and the rightwing media use these tiny, amorphous and often terribly irresponsible (probably government infiltrated) “communist-anarchist” action groups. Nobody should have any doubts about that. They aren’t very significant politically, certainly not around this issue. Nobody even knows their “program” or political “leadership.“ I wouldn’t know for sure, but it seems to me they are mostly a symbol attracting discontented youth. “Banning” them is like banning Batman and Robin and the Joker, or that little green froggie thing on the right. It would probably only make them more popular. Happily, ANTIFA hasn’t publically intervened in peaceful demonstrations recently, but they — whoever “they” are — might.

Nobody denies that there has been far too much violence. I was just watching and commenting on a huge, peaceful, multiracial demonstration of unity and solidarity still going on in NYC. Just last night NYC saw much looting. The Governor there strongly criticized the Mayor over handling the looting, and I hope they will be able to stop rioting tonight ... without shooting. This post is titled “Against Looting, Against Shooting” and is trying to highlight the many demonstrations of human solidarity occurring in cities all over the country. Maybe you can find something on FOX that will prove equally helpful, unifying and inspiring?
