It would only force more and more corporations and jobs to go overseas if you start making them pay ANY tax.

Steve Forbes proposed a 17% flat tax back in the 80's and the bean counters figured out that it wouldn't come close to covering the spending back then.

Bean counters, like many others, have a tendency to ignore information not in front of their eyes. specifically the uncacluated benefits to the economy of a simplified tax system.

Not to mention that any sane person supporting the flat tax also realizes that we need to severely cut government spending.

Kind of like the uncalculated benefits that supply side economics were going to magically produce?

A flat tax wouldn't destroy the left, but it would create even more income inequality in this country. The rich, who can hide and invest their money wouldn't be paying the tax, the poor and middle class would. 10% to someone making $20,000 a year would be devastating. The rich simply wouldn't pay it.

Speaking of the Steve Forbes flat tax, it's worth remembering that as it was proposed back in the 80's, which is when I remember it,

because of an income exemption built into it, for example (the example most often used by Forbes)

a family of four making 36,000 would pay no federal income taxes. If you adjust that for inflation you'd see that Forbes' flat tax creates generally the same situation you have today, i.e.

that a large number of lower income Americans would still pay no federal income tax. And since the flat tax is a massive tax cut for the wealthiest Americans, who makes up the difference?

The middle and upper middle classes. They are the ones that get slammed by most flat tax plans.
