The television industry and its executives have their own take on the Duck Dynasty controversy. Notice they don't use free speech as an issue.

'Duck Dynasty' Debacle Has TV Industry Abuzz As A&E Charts New Territory - Deadline.com

“A rookie mistake.” That’s how one TV industry veteran who’s put in time dealing with rogue reality stars described A&E’s handling of its Duck Dynasty nightmare.

A&E logo“It’s very difficult to keep these people in check then they get famous,” the exec noted, in A&E’s defense. Particularly when the star already has amassed a large pile of money making bird-calling devices for hunters, believes he has a religious calling, and isn’t afraid to lose his TV series. A&E is charting new territory, execs with whom we spoke acknowledged. “You’ve got an immovable object who actually believes he has God on his side. He’s a multimillionaire who lives in a swamp!” one industry image specialist acknowledged. “I don’t’ think he gives a flying fuck whether or not [A&E] agrees with him. I don’t think there’s any fear in this guy.” Ditto the rest of the Robertson family, who quickly issued a statement suggesting they will not do the show without Phil.

Our panel of industry execs is still scratching their heads in re why the A&E let Phil Robertson, a guy whose religious beliefs were well known to the network, within 100 yards of a GQ interview.

It's not like they haven't tried. They just haven't found another cash cow the size of Duck Dynasty. Mostly because A&E assumed they were dealing with ignorant rednecks and weren't.

The television industry executives know there is no easy way out for A&E.

I may be the only person in the US who doesn't watch this show. But the legal issue has gotten my attention. I had patients telling me how much they enjoyed it when it first came on. But it just isn't my type of show. However, I do find it refreshing that there is someone in the world who will stand behind what he believes and has the right to believe not matter what the cost.

We never turn the TV on when my family gets together. But if you want to park your TV on a channel AWE is still wishing their viewers "Merry Christmas."

A&E is being shortsighted for caving to special interest groups. This keeps happening and it is a ratings killer for Disney. Another network will pick them up and run.

Networks continue to screw up, Maher, Imus, Deen, Bashir and Phil. Yet, A&E does Duck Marathons, they must not be to upset with
Phil.

I've seen it twice, both times I thought it was stupid. You can't tell me that these guys own a million dollar company, college educated and are that stupid. You'd be a fool to believe that.

If you liked Seinfeld you'd like Duck Dynasty. Seinfeld billed itself as the show about nothing. Ordinary people dealing with ordinary situations in a humorous way. A daughter's first date, a son's first car. The air conditioning breaks, a fishing boat sinks. Very ordinary situations. It's not surprising that Duck Dynasty became so popular. Seinfeld was popular in the same way.

In America, all you have to do is build a better mousetrap. Apparently that applies to duck calls as well.

Since that's just the way it is, you'd have to be into some heavy reality denial to believe otherwise.

Phil Robertson was a teacher. He graduated Louisiana Tech and turned down a spot in the NFL because he'd rather go hunting. He just decided to chuck it all for a life he liked better.

Bullshit on the "I do find it refreshing that there is someone in the world who will stand behind what he believes" line.

Nutters far and wide are praising the idiot for "sticking to his principles". The only reason that is happening is because you agree with his principles. The 9-11 hijackers stood behind what they believed. Do you find that refreshing?

Enough with the high drama. Nutters do not own standing on principle.

Yet, pretty much everyone in the television industry agrees that A&E made a bonehead mistake that they will pay dearly for.

Yes, I loved seeing Phil stand up for his principles. They are my principles and it's a good thing someone is standing up for them.
