All that whoopdedoo about US women's soccer and demanding equal pay and they get shut out by little Portugal and came within 6 inches of getting sent home losers. Where is the great Rappaho? On the bench? I've sampled the games haven't seen her once. Maybe she's injured, prolly a good thing they would have lost with her slow ass on the field.

Well if they had come within my 6 inches, they would have gone home winners, believe me.

Let's look at the big picture here.

Among MEN, one main reason why American men suck in international soccer competition is that the top American male athletes have a whole cornucopia of sports to play, many of which are much more lucrative than soccer. The best athletes are playing football, basketball, or baseball; they are NOT playing soccer. Soccer gets mediocre athletes who play their hearts out, but the reason they are playing soccer is because they were not good enough at any other sport.

But the women can't say that. If a woman is a top athlete in the U.S., SHE IS PROBABLY PLAYING SOCCER. She COULD be playing another sport, but soccer is probably it.

For that reason, there is no excuse for the American women not to dominate international competition. They are an embarrassment...if anyone were actually paying attention.

Yeah except they prefer carpet munching.

Surely not all of them do, eh? It's been a while since I kept up with chic soccer but I remember a team when they were some hard-bodied babes. Going back 20 or so years ago now. Fuck I'm old.

Leo Messi, maybe you've heard of him, was just offered an annual salary that exceeds the entire payroll of the NBA - he turned it down

Good to see the self styled "patriots" hoping for the worst outcome for America's team in this tournament.

BTW... the USWNT made it to the round of 16. Not exactly anywhere near "sucking".

Really folks; you guys are the scum of the earth.

They had a huge head start as competitive women's soccer around the world was an upstart. The real competition was only a few teams for many years. Women are getting better at it in competing. You still see awful teams there in Olympics or World Cup. Our nation used to e of striving for excellence. Now we are too individualistic and to level the playing field have handicapped those who may be better. These ladies may still win. After all they were/are ranked the top team in the world. So far, they have not looked like it. The Viet Nam's are reducing in numbers.

But they have looked flat. They should have overwhelmed Vietnam, but only won 3-0. The Dutch destroyed Vietnam, what 7-0, 8-0... not sure the final score.
Then they barely got away with a tie against the dutch and they almost lost by 2" against Portugal who had a shot come off the right post with only 2 mins left. Had that gone in, the US was headed home. Think about that, saved by an inanimate object.

The team is unimaginative on and off the ball. Having watched all three games, many times you can see players standing, waiting for the player with the ball to do something. That's not how soccer is played. Moving off the ball is equally important as moving with the ball. Making runs, running into space, passing into space for players to run onto. It's not happening. But, when a player does make a run, the player with the ball refuses to pass into that space. As a former player, it's frustrating to watch. The have shown no ability to be able to move the ball in the middle and in tight quarters. Very little one touch passes splitting defenses. There best opportunities so far have been on free kicks, that's it. As important as free kicks can be, that can't be your only source of offense.

USWNT used to be able to rely on being better athletes who played soccer. Now, they are playing against soccer players that are athletes and these other countries are catching them.

Whole heartedly agree. I use the term "corporate" to describe both the women's and men's national teams. It is almost as if the individual players are afraid to achieve greatness on their own. So they go into these matches as this known quantity. The other team (if they're well coached and have the athletes) know what the center back is going to do because we dare not deviate from the system. So they make passes in our third of the pitch knowing that they will be safe because they are not going to press and take chances to get a breakaway going the other direction.

Soccer is extremely lucrative if you truly make it to the very top, but the issue here is cultural; in America, other sports are just more popular and thus take priority.

Few American men barely manage to exit the MLS which is a very bad league.

American men are indeed mediocre at soccer.

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world among all genders and other national teams are on the same level as the US. They have lots of competition, but you make it seem like the other teams are just a bunch of 8 year olds.

Well, the do dominate the sport. They have 4 world cups to one for Japan, Norway and two for Germany. Germany are out, Norway are out.
Every team goes through phases. Sometimes you have a great player or a great bunch of players, and then they get old and another team has great players. Right now James for England is looking amazing where as Brazil's Martha is old and the US's Rapinoe is getting old.

Rapinoe gets flak, but she scored in the win at the last final, player of the match, she played in the win over Japan four years before that, but the US went through three world cups without winning, two without getting to the final. The US's worst performances have been third.
However money is entering the game. England have outspent most countries, certainly in Europe and probably in the world.
Look at men's soccer. Germany won in 2014, then in 2018 they came bottom of their group stage.
Spain won in 2010 and came third in their group stage in 2014.
Italy won in 2006 and in 2010 they came bottom of their group. They also won the Euros in 2021 and failed to get to the world cup in 2022 (and 2018)

That's why soccer is popular, because you never know what's going to happen.

It is important to note that there is a huge difference between a knock-out-tournament like the World Cup and a league series as well. In the previous, momentum and luck plays a much bigger part than in the latter. This is why big teams sometimes get knocked out from such competitions.

Yes, though the US played in a four team mini-tournament and nearly went out, but they qualified. Now the knockout stages are taking place.

It is not a "mini tournament", it is called the group stage and is also part of the knock-out-style tournament that the World Cup is. Each team in the same group play each other once and then the top two advance to the Round of 16.
