A majority of women believe some rape victims should take responsibility for what happened, a survey suggests.

Almost three quarters of the women who believed this said if a victim got into bed with the assailant before an attack they should accept some responsibility.

One-third blamed victims who had dressed provocatively or gone back to the attacker's house for a drink.

The survey of more than 1,000 people in London marked the 10th anniversary of the Haven service for rape victims.

More than half of those of both sexes questioned said there were some circumstances when a rape victim should accept responsibility for an attack.

The study found that women were less forgiving of the victim than men.

Of the women who believed some victims should take responsibility, 71% thought a person should accept responsibility when getting into bed with someone, compared with 57% of men.

The survey also found more than one in 10 people were unsure whether they would report being raped to the police, and 2% said they would definitely not do so.

The main reasons were being too embarrassed or ashamed (55%), wanting to forget it had happened (41%) and not wanting to go to court (38%).

If you (AS A MALE) have an acquaintance, male, and you stop by his house after a night out and you get drugged and assaulted, is it then your fault? Suppose you were dressed up and looking handsome at the time, was he then provoked by you?

In the rare instance it is a woman who drugs you (THE MALE) and you wake up chained and loaded with viagra, ready to "perform," is it then your fault?

Being in the company of a male does not give him the right to sex.... PERIOD.

On the other hand, regarding dress, I can just hear the screams of outrage from western men, denied the chance to sneak a peep if western women suddenly started wearing abaya and hijab for self protection and to make the point that sexual assault is not a birthright of the male!

I don't believe anyone said anything about giving a man a "right to sex". It sounds like those women are just acknowledging the reality that all of us live with, to whit: you have a responsibility for your own safety to not put yourself in a situation where you're in danger. And women are harsher about it than men because, unlike men, they are the ones who have to live with an awareness of the possibility of rape.

In an ideal world, yes. In the real world, it is way too easy for people to get their signals crossed in the heat of the moment. Which is not to say that the guy doesn't bear responsibility for being aware of and responsive to his partner, but the woman bears some responsibility for letting it go that far.

In a Ramadan sermon that has outraged Muslim women leaders, Sydney-based Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali also alluded to the infamous Sydney gang rapes, suggesting the attackers were not entirely to blame.
While not specifically referring to the rapes, brutal attacks on four women for which a group of young Lebanese men received long jail sentences, Sheik Hilali said there were women who "sway suggestively" and wore make-up and immodest dress ...
