The Etch-o-Sketch comment is devastating because like Dukakis' comment that he wouldn't want to execute the hypothetical rapist who killed his wife, it plays into what you already kind of suspect about the guy.
For instance, other than compete Right Wing Whackjobs, the "57 States" thing didn't have any real legs with Obama because people know he's not an intellectual lightweight, unlike Rick Perry (didn't know which three departments he'd eliminate) or Sarah Palin (didn't know which Korea was our friend).
The "Clinging to Guns and Bibles" comment did have legs, because you all kind of suspected Obama was an elitist who looked down on Middle America.
