It is neither martyrdom NOR effective. It's a very dumb and painful suicide that really... help me out here... helps what cause again? I've seen the film and when I learned it was done by the monk flambe... I was dumbstruck with how dumb it was.Generally, suicide is grievous non-virtue.
In the case of the Vietnamese monks during the Vietnam War, these were considered self-less acts.
What do you think?
Oh, and hunger strikes are just as stupid. Let em starve if they want to starve. You want to immolate? Fine. The worst you do is burn down the building you're in, block traffic for a while with your charred corpse and wreck the asphalt where you did it.
About as effective as chicken shit on a pump handle.
I saw that self-immolation when I was a teenager, and it had a huge impact on me.
This is where your "spiritual" side should kick in, what is "right"? Would you want to find your so-called "wife" immolated? Would you want to find anyone you know that way?
If your posts are accurate, you have had a pretty tough time in life. I have discovered that events like those tend to make the person "stronger" in their will to overcome adversity. I have also discovered that life is way easier, if you start everyday saying thank you for what you have instead of worrying about what you don't have. Many times you find, you didn't "need" it anyway.
I have seen a lot of broken bones and wounds, and know how people handled that. I have no desire to wound myself because I know that I am not the most noble of those people. It would be a big disappointment.
