Why do I keep seeing people suggesting otherwise as if it's a fact?

Because, Rs want to keep poor people poor.

Because, if one is elderly, a child, a person of color, a woman, unemployed, gay, educated etc etc, the Rs see you as the enemy and works to take everything you own away from you.

As I already posted, CON$ admit that Libs are more financially successful than CON$ when they brag about their generosity, which is why davebaby desperately tried to change the subject. CON$ are such lazy slackers, rather than even try to achieve as much as the Libs, they simply declare themselves achievers without having to earn it. Libs are the makers, which is why they are wealthier, and CON$ are the takers.

Actually, one of the primary achievements of the Reagan Revolution was to capture poor working class people in the south and heartland .

This was done primarily through religion, values, patriotism and fear. [You have to study the Family Values campaign starting with Goldwater and turned into an industry under Reagan, with a network of think tanks and publishing groups designed to transform the opinions and sympathies of the poor]

Where the Democrats talked about equality and social justice, the Republicans communicated to the poor through a rhetoric of God, Tradition, Family and Nation - all of which [get ready for the fear] were under siege by atheists, hippies, bra burners, communists, socialists, gays, illegal aliens, terrorists, etc.

From Nixon's silent majority to Reagan Democrats, the Right successfully converted the poor and working class through values populism. Many Reagan Democrats were poor northern Catholic workers who didn't identify with the radicalism of the anti-war, sexually liberated sixties Left.

When the Left abandoned the poor working class to save marginal groups, the Right stepped in.

Indeed, in the sixties FDR's poor working class left was replaced by the McGovern's new left, which was centered in the Northeast. It was driven by effete wealthy college kids, and it was preoccupied with social issues (racism, sexism, alternative lifestyles, etc). The FDR Left was rapidly patriotic, and quite racist in the South. The McGovern Left was critical of the USA, especially the military and its white male power structure. These two versions of the Left could not be more different. Indeed, the cleavage in the Left is what allowed the Right to peel off large sections of the lower and middle class.

Meaning: the Right successfully captured the poor a long time ago. Yes, many poor people and minorities vote Democrat, but you're simply wrong to suggest that it's common knowledge that the poor vote Democrat in post-Reagan America. I don't know anybody who thinks that poor, rural, gun-toting, god fearing, salt-of-the-earth bible thumpers vote Democrat.

My advice: turn off talk radio and study history. The Right makes a living off using religion, patriotism, gays, baby killers and foreign demons to capture the poor. This is old news.
