Judd Gregg Withdraws from Consideration

All this was based on a report credited to unnamed sources. Obama never stated such a thing.

Actually it was based on reports from minority groups that met with Obama and the response of Gibbs to reporters. You're quite correct, not going to get a 'straight answer' from this administration, not on anything. Jobs created OR saved. No Fairness Doctrine while campaigning, now silence.

The part about moving the Census out of Commerce is based on a comment from an unnamed source. It has no basis in reality.

The White House providing oversight to the Census is one of their choices, if not duties. They don't call it the president's cabinet for nothing. Making sure a Republican (or a Democrat) gets something correct is the right thing to do. Especially since the Republicans prove over and over again...at least since their "Contract on America,"...that their party is more important to them than anything else.

White House: Census Director to 'Work Closely' with West Wing
By Jonathan Allen, CQ Staff Jonathan Allen, Cq Staff – Thu Feb 5, 6:34 pm ET - CQ Politics
"The Obama administration acknowledged Thursday that the as-yet-unnamed Census Bureau director will have a direct line to the White House but sought to define the relationship as one in which the director would "work closely with" rather than report to President Obama's senior staff.

After black and Hispanic leaders raised concerns over Commerce Secretary-nominee Judd Gregg's commitment to core functions of the Census Bureau, a senior White House official told CQ on Wednesday that the director would report directly to the White House."

”President Obama has decided to have the director of the U.S. Census Bureau work directly with the White House, the administration said today, a move that comes as the Census Bureau prepares to conduct the 2010 census that will determine redistricting of congressional seats.
Under the Bush administration, the Census Bureau director reported to the commerce secretary. Obama is adding oversight of the director by senior White House aides, but keeping the bureau itself under the umbrella of the Department of Commerce, White House spokesman Ben LaBolt said. ….”

Thanks for proving my point, AH. One article is from an unnamed source, another is about providing oversight and leaving the census in the commerce department.

Why would anyone think for a minute that the White House shouldn't provide oversight?
