How Did Trump confuse conservatives about trade?

How did Obama convince the...duh...mainstream democrats that good American factory jobs were gone forever? The unemployment numbers for young Black kids was in double digits and democrats ...duh... were unaware of it or didn't give a damn. Barry Hussein used to brag about increasing food stamp usage and duh democrats thought it was a good thing. President Trump wants to fix the trade deficit and ...duh...democrats think it's a tax.
Tariffs are a tax...

I really don't understand all this support for the trump tariffs. This is just a tax on us. Conservatives are supposed to be against taxes. And so far the results aren't good. The steel industry is a good example of this, lots of layoffs after the trump tariffs.

.....
It is still clear that free trade is the way. So why the confusion?

Except that results of the last 50 years of Free Trade are not what was promised.
We have lots of jobs and wealth.

That is nice.

My point about the results of the Free Trade policy not being what was promised, still stands.

I'm not sure why you choose to "reply", but not address my point, in any fashion.

You didn't make any specific claim. We have done very well with free trade. Very low unemployment, lots of wealth, largest economy in the world....

You will have to share what and who promised it.

You don't recall all the talk about how American companies would learn to become more productive and innovative and that workers would either be rehired or retrained for new and exciting high tech jobs, and things would return to a new and better "normal" of rising wages for all?

You need to provide some links. We have done quite well.

Steel layoffs in US mount due to falling production and trade war

So we are already seeing the failings of this policy. Tariffs are always a bad idea. Every economist knows these, they are just a political game:

Reagan knew they were bad policy:

Here is one of the greatest small government economists:

One argument I keep hearing is people claiming tariffs work great for Europe and China. That is not at all true, Europe has never had a stronger economy than us, how is that working? China hasn't been successful because of tariffs, they have over a billion people and went from a communist economy to discovering capitalism. Of course they have been growing quickly. Certainly conservatives still know capitalism is better than communism? China will implode soon on it's own due to demographics and pollution. Soon they will have way too many elderljy that aren't working, and they will have to cleam up the pollution mess.

It is still clear that free trade is the way. So why the confusion?

Every country in the world that I know of has tariffs

The US had tariffs before trump and we will have them after trump

As recently as may 2018 the tariff on imported cars to china was 25%

Not just US cars but all imports

Since then the trade war has prompted china to modify that down and back up according to events

You cite libertarian economists but I cant forget what that old liberal pirate warren buffet said in support of tariffs

Warren Buffett: Here's How I Would Solve the Trade Problem

Wasn’t trumps tariffs going to save ours? Doesn’t work and never has.

We still have a steel industry

Without the tariffs steel might go the same way as textiles

They are laying off workers. Are you claiming to be a conservative? You seem to think the government can save an industry. Sounds socialist...

Short term pain = long term gain. Democrats have always been short-sighted. Case in point, they still believe the way to increase tax revenue is to increase taxes vs lowering taxes and allowing organic growth to take place, add more money to the coffers from more money being made and spent. They prefer to just take it and get the short term gain. Idiotic, but that is why more than 1/2 our population has no money saved and lives pay check to pay check. Not coincidentally, it is also why about 1/2 our population votes for Democrats. They buy into liberal, nonsensical economic policies.

BTW, based on inflation rate, which is 1.8%, about 1/2 of the average in the world, there hasn't been much pain yet, just collecting a lot of money from China.

Trump didn't "confuse" anyone about trade. He came right out and said that he was going to deal with the trade imbalance, when he was campaigning.

Promises made, promises kept.

Trump told Americans exactly what he would do on trade, what countries he would bitch slap, and why. That's why Americans in 30 states voted him president!
And now our trade deficit is bigger than it has ever been in all of US history.

Good job!

How Did Trump confuse conservatives about trade?
I said many times before the 2016 election that Pied Piper Donald Trump would lead the pseudocons into the far left camp.

Boy, did they scoff!

I remember BluesLegend particularly scoffed.

President Trump has to fix decades of Dem incompetence on trade, just relax while we clean up their mess.

Every republican since at least Reagan have been for free trade....
