Yes indeed, and they employed 300 000 people, produced 30% of GDP and exports and supplied about 40% of industry with raw materials.

The white farmers , the UK and the EU put forward several fully funded schemes that would have reduced poverty , increased output and moved many black Zimbabweans out of subsistence farming into commercial agriculture without negatively affecting food security and exports and employment.

These were all rejected by Mugabe.

When Mugabe lost, for the first time ever, a referendum with which he had hoped to increase his power he decided to smash commercial agriculture. He identified that the white farmers and their large labor force supported the social democrats in the opposition MDC and so destroyed this entire threat by taking the farms and dishing it out to supporters.

The logical process put forward by the international western democracies and the very patriotic white farmers did not serve Mugabe's political objectives.

We had in 2000 a GDP of US$620 a head, today it is US$200 per head and that is after 3m out of 12m people have left the country.

There is no doubt that land reform was a necessity but now the land is all state land and no individual can own farm land. No title deeds or any other form of secure tenure and so no collateral for advances for crop inputs or infrastructural development. The land cannot be pledged, sold or bequeathed and if the party decides you must go then you have 90 days to get off the land.

This is not really about black and white , it is about rational laws leading to development and sustainable growth. Mugabe has portrayed it as a racial re-balancing on the spurious grounds that the land was stolen by whites. The truth is over 80% of these farms were bought after Independence in 1980 and the government stated that it had no interest in the land and took a tax on each sale.

The land grab has destroyed a great deal because it was done for political, not social or economic , reasons.

The black people accept this as being OK so there is a great deal of tension as a consequence.

I guess if I owned the vast majority of a land's wealth, I'd just want to be left alone to live in peace (now that I owed so much because of the violent takeover of it from its original inhabitant in the past), too.
