Gingrich Pledges To Establish Permanent Base On The Moon ‘By The End Of My 2nd Term'

In a speech pandering to Florida’s aerospace community ahead of the state’s primary, GOP contender Newt Gingrich made a bold pledge to establish a permanent U.S. base on the moon “by the end of my second term.” He further promised that if he becomes president, America will get a man to Mars “in a remarkably short time.” A budget-conscious President Obama ended the program for a lunar colony and moon trip after NASA reported it didn’t have the money for any part of the plan, “and even if it were to get a budget infusion, the schedule was unworkable.” Gingrich rebutted the charge that he is “grandiose” by comparing himself to Abraham Lincoln, the Wright Brothers and John F. Kennedy. ThinkProgress has previously reported on Gingrich’s curious space fetish, which has included an idea for a “mirror system in space could provide the light equivalent of many full moons” for nighttime driving.

And I damn sure don't plan on drinking reconstituted piss water.

You do realize that water is cyclical don't you? The fact is we are always drinking reconstituted piss water.

Not if you drink only rainwater like General Ripper.

All rainwater comes from evaporated ground water/ocean water. When we urinate, our urine goes into the ground water/ocean water. When that urine evaporates, the water from it becomes rainwater.

So yes, even if you drink only rainwater.

How is it the so called "anti-science" party members understand the water cycle better than the self proclaimed pro science ones?

How expensive would that be? I mean, wouldn't any ore mined on the moon have to be processed here? And wouldn't it be DAMNED expensive to transport ALL that weight back through our atmosphere onto our planet? In a capitalist system, who could afford the price of that ore when there's ore and minerals to be mined right here on this planet?

TOO FUCKIN FUNNY.

And you guys claim the gop is anti science. LOL

Here's a tidbit for you.

The moon has very little gravity to escape. And the flight through our atmosphere is..........get this.............FREE! Because of gravity.

Think before you post.

Well, unless you want that ore ship to burn up in the atmosphere, a very serious fuel supply would be necessary to get it here in one piece.

Ceramic tile protects the ship from the heat. It would require VERY LITTLE FUEL to get home.

PS. I'M GOP. DON'T EVER CALL ME IGNORANT OF SCIENCE WITH THE SHEER LEVEL OF IGNORANCE YOUR DISPLAYING ON THE SUBJECT.

Don't be so small minded.

Getting off the moon is easy.

And no, everything could be done much easier on the moon since there would be no concern about pollution. The only thing that would run up the price would be the cost of labor and training.

Well, I guess Newt would just have to ban unions on the moon. Problems solved!

please resist the impulse to go full retard.

Just to get people to go and stay, any company would have to pay a pant load of money.

That would mean another space race with China. We USED to be ahead of the world. Now we depend on the Russians to get us as far as the space station. If the Russians would cut a deal with China and tell us to take a hike, well, you see where that would go.

This neither saves money nor shrinks government, and in fact does the exact opposite of both. This is the alleged "conservative" alternative to Romney?

To be fair, both Newt and Romney have talked about getting a space program with the private sector leading the way. Its possible to do this without any government money theoretically.

Private people pay $25 Million just to ride along now. Imagine what they would pay to walk on the moon.

Would people who go to the moon to work really need a union? It seems to me that the relocation there would make it pretty profitable to take the job.

I would be first in line! If they accepted monopoly money, of course.

Duh... How do you think they reconstitute piss in the first place?

You guys are so full of it. Had Obama proposed this you would be all over it.

It's a pro American pro private venture. What's not to support?

Republicans simply don't understand what it means to develop new technologies. They call doing something we've done many times before "new science".

Of course, they don't want to develop this country either. Destroying education. Bringing down the economy. Slashing education.

Newt Gingrich's Stupid Idea

By David Appell

According to David Brooks, Newt Gingrich has suggested that “a mirror system in space could provide the light equivalent of many full moons so that there would be no need for nighttime lighting of the highways.”

This is an idiotic idea that immediately qualifies him for President, if the other ten thousand reasons didn't already convince you that he is the devil incarnate. (I mean that with a level of seriousness greater than zero.) It might save, what, 1-2% off our national electricity bill? On the other hand, it's going to light up whole counties like two yokels with a spotlight looking for deer in a Pennsylvania hay field, and who can possibly sleep through that? (Really, people -- sleep is important.) You can't aim a space mirror so it just illuminates the 50 meter-wide slice of Interstate 70, and sleeping with your blinds down every night can get creepy real fast. What if you're camping? What about all the animals -- they need to sleep too. (Just ask my cats.) What about astronomy, for Christ's sake? You can't cut the James Webb telescope and ruin optical astronomy -- are we supposed to look at our feet all day long? The stars fascinate us, inspire us, even give some of us hope. Take that away and you might well stick a hose up our ass and drain the life out, which I sometimes think is the true goal of the Republican party anyway.

Just leave the night sky alone, OK? That isn't too much to ask from a presidential candidate, even if he is an irreducible representation of the end days of civilization. Jeez.

Yes, given the current state of the country we need to spend millions on that stuff.
Maybe he is thinking that will create jobs?
