California is gonna

Here is California's problem and how they will solve it.

Raise taxes on cigarettes and create a whole new bureaucratic system to manage the taxes raised by the new tax. New political salaried appointees, new supervisors, middle managers and clerks. The first 25 million dollars a year raised by this tax is designated for administrative fees. The tax causes smoking to go down or at least diminish the purchase of legal cigarettes. The drop in the revenue stream has to come from someplace. All these government workers are not suddenly going to lose their jobs. They will have to find something else to tax. Start with soda, candy, sugar and salt.

The entire goal is to tax the people for the government's support. Not to benefit the people. The only benefit is to the government.

Smoking is bad, most people that smoke are adults. Putting another industry that employes people out of business is a good thing?? Yea, that makes perfect sense.

Sorry, but putting the tobacco companies out of business isn't a bad thing. It would be worth it in health care costs alone. Smokers cost the country $96 billion a year in direct health care costs, and an additional $97 billion a year in lost productivity. (according to the CDC)

Obesity is also a huge health care cost. Is California gonna tax fat, too. I'm sure it's just a matter of time. What are they gonna do put McDonalds out of business.......oh snap..... they're already trying that.

here, a dose of reality;

California is suffering this tax drought even as most other states enjoy a revenue rebound. State tax collections were up nationally by 8.9% last year, according to the Census Bureau, and this year revenues are up by double digits in many states. The state comptroller reports that Texas is enjoying 10.9% growth in its sales taxes (it has no income tax), while California can’t seem to keep up despite one of the highest tax rates in the land.

California will NEVER fix it's economic woes until it's got the BALLS to address it's ILLEGAL ALIEN problem. Until then, the state will sink until it suffers the same fate as Greece, and that's not to far off. And that's what you get when you keep electing leftist socialists to run your state.

Can't say as I feel sorry for Californians, they've done this to themselves. A prime example of "cut your own throat."

Biggest problem is it will pull the rest of the country down with it, so it will be up to the rest of the country to clean it up, and I have little faith in that either. There are VERY dark clouds on the horizon for this country, the world. The storm is about upon us. Keep your powder dry.

tax cigarettes another $1.00 per pack.. supposedly to get smokers to stop smoking..:lol::lol::lol::lol: and then they want ya to amoke some pot.:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: California is nutzoid.

Yeah crazy because Pot has good uses and cigs are bad all the way arround.

quess who the real idiot is

The only thing wrong with California is that it's full of Californians.

Actually its more full of illegals than anything else.

And they love it, they welcome them, they coddle them, make allowances for them, even though the illegals are bleeding the state into ruin.

Figure that one out... :eusa_eh:

They are under the impression the illegals are interested in becoming Americans and contributing to this country but most of them are not, most illegals nowadays come here to earn US Cash to send back home to Mexico or whatever Latin American country they are from, billions of dollars of US Cash goes over the border every year, they live here in squalid conditions, refuse to learn English or assimilate into American culture, they want the cash and thats all. Technically their not really immigrants.

Compared to most states California was rolling along pretty well, then-----then in 1978 California:
A) blew a hole in their revenue stream by putting a cap on property taxes while simultaneously,
B) instituting minority rule in both houses of their legislature.

California has been slip, sliding and struggling ever since.

The claim that the people of California aren't taxed enough is too absurd for words. California is one of the most heavily taxed states in the union. The problem with California is liberal Democrats who never saw a spending program they didn't like.

Are you saying CA Dems have a ⅔ majority in both the state Assembly and the state Senate?

To rank the state’s tax burdens, the Tax Foundation compared the total taxes that state residents pay as a percentage of per capita income. Included in the total taxes are local taxes such as property taxes and local sales taxes.

States With The Lowest Taxes

The states whose residents pay the least in taxes are:
  • Alaska at 6.4% of income
  • Nevada at 6.6% of income
  • Wyoming at 7% of income
  • Florida at 7.4% of income
  • New Hampshire at 7.6% of income
States With The Highest Taxes
  • New Jersey at 11.8% of income
  • New York at 11.7% of income
  • Connecticut at 11.1% of income
  • Maryland at 10.8% of income
  • Hawaii at 10.6% of income
Average taxes for the entire US in 2009 was 9.8%, CA ranks #6 at 10.6%

I think you're study must be wrong. It ranks Washington at number 29 with 9.3% taxes, our sales taxes are more than 9% and that's not including property tax and all our other taxes.

it has to be voted on Willow.....and the people i have talked to Smoker or not....are tired of these guys trying to tax everything you do.....and when the tax gets voted down they try another way....."fees".........California for the past 15 years or so have had a Legislature with people with a mindset like Dean,Chris,Franco and "TruthMatters" running the show up in Sacramento....does that explain why this State has gone down the shitter so fast?...

Now Harry,, the last time they allowed you to vote in California the Ninth circuit overturned yer vote.. think about that.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Sorry, but anyone losing a job in this economy is not acceptable.

Health care workers will be out a job...some southern states will lose an economy base...I could go on, but won't.

It's up to adults to decide if they want to smoke or not, not the Nanny State.

The tax will fail.

Pretty dang close. Which has absolutely nothing to do with voting for higher taxes.

And I am sick of revenue issues being blamed on Prop 13.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Proposition_13_(1978)

Cali needs to learn to spend within its means.

LOL - "pretty dang close" [to a ⅔ majority].
You do understand it takes a ⅔ majority in both houses to raise taxes in CA don't you? Pretty dang close counts in hand grenades and horseshoes but-----but doesn't improve revenues one iota in the State of CA.

duh...me no understand anything. :cuckoo: Don't confuse the voter's initiative with legislating.

You can choose to be sick of Prop 13 being blamed for revenue issues in CA, but I see you also chose not to post any evidence to refute Prop 13's role in CA's slide into revenue shortfalls -- why not?
Again, it was a voter initiative. Read the link I provided. If Prop 13 had not been enacted people would have been taxed out of their homes. Bureaucrats are too quick to blame Prop 13 for lack of revenue, rather than spending within their means.

You should read the link you posted. The link may not be exactly the link you thought you were posting.

Prop 13 was a voter initiative, but raising revenue in CA is done through the Assembly and Senate. Blaming the Dems for tax increases in CA is a steeeretch, taxes can only be raised if the Republicans allow taxes to be raised.

Wow, the funding behind the for and against campaigns are hilarious!

you are I take it familiar with the 'ghoul defense';) where will tobacco get the money to pay all these settlements?

....in a twisted way this benefits the gov.....as I posted already gray davis diverted tobacco settlement money to the general fund treasury, and instituted higher and I might add regressive tobacco taxes all the same....it was a slight of hand. enough already, its just a $$ grab, nothing more.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm heavily against this cigarette tax, and I'm certainly going to vote against it. Just thought the money trail was pretty funny.

Who knew me and the California Republican Party would agree on something?

And your point? Nobody is saying cigarette smoking is good for you. But why legislate morality? And if you do, shouldn't the people that are paying the taxes be the benificiaries? That money won't be going into a public health fund. It'll be going towards the pension of do nothing fat cats.

We've seen this movie a thousand times. We know how it goes.

This has been a pet peeve of mine all along: The taxes I pay don't go to cover anyone's medical expenses. We all know this. The people who want these taxes know this. They also know we're sitting targets. Most of us won't quit--until we're dead. So here we are. Take our money please, we don't need it. Oh, and wait, aren't the same folks who want to tax us also the same folks who'll caution children against the addictive nature of nicotine? Ummm. . .let me see. . .we need some quick cash. . .most people won't (usually) raise taxes on themselves. . .HEY! Let's tax the addicts! HIGH FIVES ALL AROUND!

I don't think so this time. We are taxed far too heavily on everything here in CA as it is. It seems like that's the only answer our leaders ever have to fix their horrible budget. I think most of us are done with any new/increased taxes. Although, this is CA, and we have hosed ourselves in the past...
