1. Trump is a businessman. Most businessmen know that you don't get "something for nothing".
2. Zelensky wanted a guarantee of security from the US in exchange for his precious metals. Trump (and Zelensky) know that Putin invaded to keep Ukraine in Russia's "sphere of influence" and not in NATO's or the EU's. Trump should have known that Ukraine got burned by NATO when they gave up their nukes in exchange for "security guarantees", (Budapest Memorandum), and got invaded by Putin with no real security help.
3. Maybe the world understands now that the US is "tapped out".

Putin did all the provoking, but he didn’t count on uniting Europe so strongly. Russia may never get Kursk back and there’s really no reason to leave an enemy to the rear, like Kaliningrad, so that’s probably gone too. The economy of Russia is in shambles, the second strongest army in the world is now the second strongest army in Ukraine and, given the restless constituent republics, it’s territorial integrity is suspect. Putin needs to solve his own problems at home and stop trying to distract his people with a “Special Military Operation”.
