The democrats started the war. They really never thought they could remove Trump, but they hoped to damage him enough to win the Presidency in 2020. So they started their impeachment investigation, gathered all the evidence they could, came up with very little, and sent the whole mess to the Senate in a 100% PARTISAN VOTE.

The senate is controlled by the other warring party, so the Dems were fighting on enemy territory and at a disadvantage. Their hope was to bring witnesses forward to embarrass and damage Trump, but they failed to put on a strong enough case that would encourage enough republicans to break ranks. Although they did get 2, so the “no witnesses” vote was not as completely partisan as the house impeachment vote.

The Senate Impeachment hearing was NOT an investigation. It was the 'trial'.

The House violated the Constitution by not holding a House vote to begin Impeachment investigations...but they investigated....and cane up with NO crime, NO evidence, and NO WITNESSES...but Impeached the President anyway.

They then matched their case to the Senate...but were not ready to present their case on which they voted to Impeach the President - they could not justify doing so.

Instead they declared it was a political Impeachment, declared the Senate was on trial, and declared if the Senate did not agree with their admitted partisan Impeachment then the Senate was 'guilty' too....
