By many objective measures the lives of women in the United States have improved over the past 35 years, yet we show that measures of subjective well-being indicate that women's happiness has declined both absolutely and relative to men. The paradox of women's declining relative well-being is found across various datasets, measures of subjective well-being, and is pervasive across demographic groups and industrialized countries. Relative declines in female happiness have eroded a gender gap in happiness in which women in the 1970s typically reported higher subjective well-being than did men. These declines have continued and a new gender gap is emerging -- one with higher subjective well-being for men.

The Paradox of Declining Female Happiness

Why is this, women?

Because girls rule and boys drool?

I need more data than was given, I clicked on different things on the link you provided, but none came up, unless I'm missing something?

PS-I'm Happy!

my husband says its due to dr phil and thats not cool women should be happier....

Because they choose to be unhappy.

What kind of choices do you think women make to be unhappy Eve?

I know I'm happy, but there are a few things that I know would make me even happier.

Because each person controls their own happiness. You can't and shouldn't depend on another person or circumstance to make you happy. Only you can make you happy. And only you can decide you're going to be unhappy. It's a choice.

You (not specifically you, but people in general) can be happy with little, be content with a little, be miserable with a little. Too many times we think we need this or that or whatever to make us happy when the truth is, if we got that, we'd want something else to make us happy.

I hear ya, and would love to discuss this more, but right now the thing that's going to make me REALLY happy is my head on my pillow, my eyes closed, and dreaming of_______!

Because women have taken on the role of working woman in addition to still being the main taker-carer of the household. Too much stress not enough time. Just a guess.

I work full-time and have 2 kids, and I"m a single mom, but I'd say I'm happier than 90% of the people I work with. I don't know why. Maybe, because I"m living the life that I CHOSE, and I like it.

Ah, perhaps it's more of a 'frame of mind' vs. 'life in general'. Nice post.
