Because if you don't know and understand the Constitution, and especially this First Amendment which defines some basic Rights, how will you know if "which candidate best represents your interests and points of view?" is planning to work within the Law/Constitution or in violation of the Law/Constitution.

What the OP asks is within the knowledge expected when applying for citizenship.
