Exactly. But all candidates ran as populists, some of us didn't want to deal with Trump's baggage.But trump is hugely popular among the base. A populist is always likely to win the nomination.
I think that both main parties are several different parties. Maybe that is a cause of polarisation. Only two parties.
Both US parties are made up of various coalitions that would never win as a standalone party.
In 2024 both parties are vying for the black vote, generally a reliable 90% democrat vote, but only 13% of the electorate. Trump wants UAW votes over EVs. Then there are the Hispanics, Republicans are gaining.
Also in 2024 democrats are vying for soccer moms that typically vote Republican as Security moms". Dems are vying for Evangelical votes (never happen).
The post-election analysis will show which candidate did better winning votes from the various factions.
