Did I answer, over answer, or miss the question and answer a different question:

The lineage, either spiritual cultural or political or both, is passed down from ancestors to parents to children. The original older societies that relied on matriarchal lineages did not require written laws because women in charge of property knew who their daughters/heirs were by birth.

The politics of church and state came with patriarchal systems where men needed to protect control and inheritance of their estates from adultery using primogeniture and treating women and children as part of their estate. Only the clergy were literate so the written laws on marriage depended on the church. The point of liberation in Christ Jesus is to reconcile humanity with God, male with female, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, owners with workers, leaders and followers as equals and break the cycles of abuse and oppression.

The original sin corrupting man's relations has been interpreted as 1. Rebelling against parental authority 2. Economic disparity between men as meat hunters and tribe leaders over women and workers as agricultural field hands worth less in society 3. Spiritual or social inequality between men and women having unequal access to knowledge.

The laws on marriage tying property and control of estates to lineage are part of this process of spiritual and political/socioeconomic development to restore natural equal justice and peace regardless of class or gender.

Whereas I would have said to protect women which I believe ii does. Men are pigs. :)
Well it is to protect men as well

For example, gay males account for only about 10% of the population in the US, but they spread about 60% of AIDS and other STD's in the US as well.

As a general rule, monogamy is best for everyone and marriage is absolutely preferential for women and children as it requires men to be invested in the outcomes of sex over a societal level.

That would be more than enough for me to explain why religion would condemn sex before marriage. I find it interesting that it says most religions, I do not think that is accurate. It would be better to say that the modern monotheistic religions do.

Sex before marriage has risks involved and so religions were aware of the risks, as are/were atheists.

Obviously the risks have been minimized by modern science and modern medicine, and all religions should act accordingly on the question, as well as on other questions that involve sexuality.

If asked on any specifics, I can answer from an atheist's POV.

On a serious note Harley, sex is better after marriage in the ideal marital situations. Try to find out why so you don't shortchange yourself.

the difference being the 1st century would be universal approval - of sex - than 4th century exclusivity ...

1st century priest would be to have sex, not marriage - 4th century christianity is to have neither.

paterfamilias only exists for 4th century christianity ... and was the liberation of the 1st, a major reason for its dramatic conclusion. truth be told.

Its purely economic Emily. At a time when women had fewer options they had to be more careful.

Revelation is clear--Fornicators are being thrown into the lake of fire and sulpher. Ephesians 5:5 fornicators will not be in Gods kingdom. So they are trading 70-100 years of unrepentent sin and missing out on everlasting life in Gods kingdom in perfect health. 1Cor 6:9-11, Galations 5:19-21=2 lists of those who will not enter Gods kingdom.

Did God tell you that?
Um no. Its pretty obvious to an adult.
Here is a story from my village which was 95% Chapel and 5% Church.
A young couple set up home together "over the brush ". They oouldnt afford to get married. The womn in the street were outraged and held a meeeting.
The next day they sll pasted their marriage licences in their windows and there was one house in the street without a license.
They got married soon after.

You have yet to type anything that would suggest you are an adult. What does the Bible say about the subject?

But but..........fornicators can buy cake ?

That's an excellent question. The religions called the Abrahamic religions; Judaism, Christianity and Islam are essentially tribal religions. each adopted the tribal laws or Abominations to strengthen their tribes and increase their numbers, especially strong warriors to defend the tribes from their numerous perceived enemies. Therefore things like homosexuality, abortion, infidelity, divorce, even masturbation ( wasting of seed ) were all condemned. That's the nitty gritty of it all. God had nothing to do with it. Man's desire for power ( especially power over their own people ) was what it was and still is today.
