I'm not even Muslim and I know the Qur'an more accurately than you do. The translation is death and the reason for that is because that is what is preached in the Qur'an. The original addle brained prophet leveraged all of his teachings on the death of those who did not accept them.
There is more.... That particular sect of Islam sees it as an inherent religious duty to eliminate the Jews. It is taught from the early ages until young adulthood and pummeled into their brains relentlessly. Much to their credit the Iranian people have developed a more intellectual side of their society that breaks with the traditional bloodthirsty fatwah culture. However they are greatly oppressed by the current theocracy using brute Force and thuggery such as is outlined in their holy book.

Iran is 90% Shia. One of the basic doctrines of Shia fatwah is the destruction of Israel. This one thing in and of itself provides all the explanation anyone needs as to why Israel does not want Iran to have a nuclear weapon. Several one megaton placements in a geographical area as diminutive as Israel will render the entire country unlivable for decades.
This is about power. People with power try and stop others from having power. That was what the Iraq War in 2003 was all about, clipping OPEC's wings before they could get stronger.
That's probably a small part of it. If that was completely true though the United States would have stopped India and Pakistan from gaining access to nuclear weapons but they did not do that. You might ask the question why?
Yes, the biggest reason why the US hates Iran is because of Israel.
Iran's biggest problem it's not the United States or Israel.... Iran's biggest problem is the theocracy that still operates on 7th century values. The Iranian people have a large population of very brilliant scientists who are quickly pressed into service by that theocracy exclusively for religious goals. Is it any Wonder they run afoul of the international community?
