A journalist who covers the Middle East.

Hours after the U.S. and Israel began bombing Iran, a writer in Tehran texted me. โ€œThe war has started,โ€ he wrote, followed later by an animated emoji of an arm emerging from a puddle of green slime to flash a thumbs-up.
I had first connected with the writer, whom I will call Hadi, in late January. Hadi was part of a broader group of Iranian dissidents who had spent much of their adult lives toggling between imprisonment and self-imposed invisibility. But the increasing brutality of the regime was like nothing these people had ever experienced. โ€œSomething has shifted very dramatically,โ€ Hadi told me at the time. โ€œThere is more open anger. Elderly women openly curse the regime. . . . Social suffering is now tied, in peopleโ€™s minds, to political rage.โ€ He continued later, โ€œThat rage is now everywhere. It lives beside mourning. It lives beside fear. It lives beside exhaustion.โ€
A widespread internet blackout, enforced by the regime, has made it difficult to connect with those inside Iran who have been grappling with the human consequences of the governmentโ€™s crackdown. โ€œThe country has been plunged into silence,โ€ Hadi wrote to me in January. โ€œIn a forced darkness, misinformation spreads easily, and people are left with fragments.โ€ That silence was part of the reason he had reached out, why he felt the need to document what he was seeing.
At great personal risk, Hadi connected me with dissidents, political prisoners, and their relatives, who all described their plights as the regimeโ€™s repressive campaign escalated in the weeks leading up to the war. He also began sending me daily updates in the form of videos, voice notes, and diary entries. He explained the histories of Iranian protest movements, and he observed the destruction in his besieged city. His sobering reports were often tempered by a dark humor. Today, in a new, as-told-to interactive piece for The New Yorker, I share much of our correspondence.
After the American and Israeli bombardment began in late February, Hadiโ€™s messages turned into a live feed of evidence, chronicling the warโ€™s imprint on daily life in Iran. He sent images of street corners where bakery lines stretched for blocks. One video, which he filmed over his shoulder, showed a rally of regime supporters filling up an alleyway at night. Another clip showed a plume of smoke billowing from the Revolutionary Court, which had been hit in an Israeli air strike. โ€œI was brought there in handcuffs, with a beard on my face from having spent months in solitary confinement,โ€ he wrote to me. โ€œThatโ€™s where I was put on trial. Itโ€™s strange and ironic now to think about what has happened to that building.โ€
The days wore on, and neighborhoods emptied as people fled town. Grocery stores ran low on basic foods like meat and eggs. The price of cigarettes doubled. Hospital wards, A.T.M.s, and gas stations closed. The internet became more unstable, and Hadiโ€™s updates arrived less frequently, but with more urgency. Some of his friends were disappearing. Others were getting harassed by agents of the regime, who arrived at their homes to confiscate their devices and assault their relatives. Today, on Nowruz, the Persian New Year, Iranian authorities executed three men who were convicted of killing police officers during anti-government demonstrations in January.
In his last dispatch to me, earlier today, Hadi sent a photo of a haft-sinโ€”a traditional table he had laid with old poetry books and mementos from โ€œlost loved ones,โ€ like a candle he had lit for his mother, which he would keep burning until morning. His message was reflective and hopeful: โ€œThe moment of the new yearโ€™s arrival was striking,โ€ he wrote. โ€œIt reminded me of a Nowruz from my childhood, during the war with Iraq. We were sitting at the haft-sin table, and I was watching the goldfish in its bowl when suddenly the electricity went out and the air-raid sirens began to wail. Back then, Saddam Hussein was attacking us. Today it is Trump and Netanyahu.โ€
โ€œI have a strange sense of optimism,โ€ he continued. โ€œI feel that this could be a very important year for the country. Even amid war, the weakening of the forces of repression may offer new possibilities for Iranโ€™s freedom movement.โ€

The only question for the Iranians that remains is: "Are you angry enough to fight?"
They lost 30,000 people before the war.

Sadly, that is a very strong motivating factor to avoid the fight, especially when you probably lost some of your most committed fighters.

This is a reminder why men like me will continue to expose the criminals who have violated my rights. Men have died for them here and elsewhere. The maggots in my country who have destroyed our economy and reputation are the same who would oppress the brave Iranian people who want to be free.

I heard it was many more than 30k souls.

We can only hope those who remain get the word: the USA and it's allies (the free people of the world) are on the job and doing what we can. The people of the USA need the people of Persia to stand up for our mutual survival.

Against the USA, Israel and their Middle-East serfs? - you bet.
You think USA and Israel are the threat to Iranian liberty? Perhaps you didn't get the memo that they executed a 19 year old for protesting. Or the murder of a woman a coiple of years ago who was imprisoned because she did not cover her face. Who supports a government who forces women to cover their faces? Evil and cowardly. I am not going to get gung ho about some forever war and it is definitely not popular with young Americans. I will stand in solidarity with Iranians who wish to be free and any nation who is willing to assist them though. There is also a much bigger geo-political situation here with China in particular. These are high stakes.

yidnar "disagrees" wow! so Iran and it's people are not fighting against the USA, Israel and their Middle-East serfs.
Wonder on which planet he lives and dreams all day long.
Seems the remaining government of Iran is fighting for it's life and losing fast.

Iran didn't impose those crippling sanctions of the past 47 years onto themself - you dolt!

And the US aka ICE executed/murdered (without a court verdict) a guy holding a mobile - WTF are you even blabbering about?

The "liberators" bombed a girls school, and then denied they bombed a girls school.

No admission
No apology
They will remember.

It's people are fighting the USA and Israel? how is that?
How many years has it been now since the Shah was overthrown in a revolution yet.... the country's leaders require to keep the "Islamic Revolution" alive decade after decade and keeping their population controlled with armed guards called the IRGC?

So you believe the Iranian people will just forget all that their leaders are doing to them...and tomorrow thier new rallying cry will be about a school that we acidentally hit?

The Iran people can see the US and Israel killing / trying to kill all their leaders. Bombing civilian targets. And trying to make their lives as difficult as possible.

And hoping they will blame their government for their suffering, instead of the people actually causing their suffering.

His argument isn't based on what the Pentagon is saying. It's based on how everyone else is behaving.

Iran's strategy now is rope-a-dope. Run out the clock. Wait for American public opinion to shift. Hope the midterms create political pressure on Trump to stop. It is the only play they have left.

As long you don't realize/understand that around 70% of Iranians are deeply religious - you and others will never understand anything about Iran.

What was the name of the school and what town or city was the school in?

Next, show me on a map where that school is actually in the town your city you named.

Yes the Iranian theocracy did.
Their choices and actions resulted in the sanctions.
Alternate choices and actions would have prevented.

It's called personal responsibility and Leftists and liars like you fail at such.

Doesn't mean they all support the blasphemous distortions of their theocracy rulers.
