Did I say anything about "the end"?
No, I didn't. A nuclear war hardly can "the end" in any practical meaning (especially if it's fought in more or less reasonable way).

The issue is, that during Cold War 1.0 there were zero situations, in which such a show was necessary (including Carribean Missile Crisis).
And if Ukrainian counter-offensive were more or less successful, there were pretty good chances that the Russians could prefer to attack the US nuclear forces. Because the USA never were that relatively weak and, simultaneously, that provocative.
