ARMIES IN THE NEAR EAST - A Possible Locale for Act II in the War

The countries which make up this possible theater of war divide up into these classifications: (1) the Allies' friend (Turkey); (2) French - controlled (Syria); (3) British - owned or dominated (Palestine, Transjordan, Egypt, Iraq, and such small states as Aden, Oman, Hadramaut); and (4) the independents (Saudi Arabia, Iran).


Turkey lives in two worlds. A European power, though only a fraction of her 294,416 square miles are in Europe, she is a leader in the Balkan Entente. But Turkey also is Near Eastern, having a non-aggression pact with Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan - all possible points of German-Russian attack. In the First World War, Turkey was on Germany's side . But in the current war, it has leaned strongly to the Allied side, calling itself "not neutral, but only non-belligerent for the moment."
Bordering on Russia, it controls the entrance to the Black Sea, and has a tough, well-trained army of 350,000 which can be expanded over- lnight to a million men.
Just as in the Balkans, Turkey is a key power in the Near East, allied militarily with France and Britain.

• French Mandated Syria was once part of the Ittoms Enpire, grabbed by France as a spoils of the last war. The whole area is run by a French commisioner and the French Army. Stationed in it are from 275,000 to 300,000 men under command of General Weygand, former commissioner.

• British - Mandated Palestine and Transjordan, likewise former parts of the Ottoman Empire, are contrasts. Transjordan gives the British so little trouble that its 34,740 square desert miles are policed by less than 1,600 men.
Palestine, on the other hand, in its 10,492 square miles (slightly larger than Vermont) packs more concentrated hatred than any other section of the Near East. This hatred exists between the Arabs and Jews and springs from a deep-rooted dispute as to which group has first claim on the region as a home land. The Arabs, who are Semitic themselves but who hate the Jews for their prosperity and who fear they would dominate any Palestine self-government, rise sporadically against them.


Palestine's Arabs admire Hitler for his Jew - baiting. In event of war on the Near Eastern Front, Arab uprisings could be embarrassing. To ease the situation, Britain last October halted Jewish immigration to Palestine, which is still run by a British commissioner. Two
weeks ago Britain forbade the sale of any more Arab land to the Jews.

ARABS LIKE BLOOD AND THUNDER.

In Cairo, their reasons take a different, turn. Although the city is a boom town, due to the millions which British interests and troops have poured into the place since war began, the Egyptian man-in-the-street takes a malicious delight in watching the British take a few on the chin. Yet, like the Irish of Dublin, who feel the same way, they actually do want England to win this war.

In Syria and Palestine, where Hitler may one day move, sympathy for the axis among the Arabs is due to another reason. Their centuries-old heritage is an understanding of the "strong man" who maintains power by blood and the sword. King Ibn Saud, a despot having life and death power over millions, is largely respected and loved by his Arab subjects.

They sense in Hitler a similarity, as they listen to broadcasts in Arabic from Zeesen, Germany.

Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt, broadcasting about democracy, and discussing idealistic conditions which Arabs do not understand, unfortunately fail to impress them.

Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh worked as a teacher for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in the past, former UNRWA official Ahmad Oueidat revealed in an interview with the London-based Al-Hiwar TV channel last week, according to footage translated by MEMRI.

“First and foremost, we can mention Ismail Haniyeh, who was an UNRWA teacher, and so was Dr. Talal Naji, Secretary-General of the PFLP-GC,” said Oueidat.

The former UNRWA official said that UNRWA has tried “to constitute a national platform and a long arm, which would enable the Palestinian refugees to obtain their rights and first and foremost – the Right of Return.”

“There used to be quality in [UNRWA’s] education. The teaching cadres really embraced their profession. However, the Americans and the Zionists did not look at this favorably. This is why they insisted on interfering. We, as UNRWA employees, had to deal with that interference. My final position was head of the Professional Development and Curriculum Unit, so I had to deal with it directly. They forced us to remove pictures and various topics….

‘Hamas is firing mortars at Shifa’: IDF reveals Hamas abuse of Gaza hospital

Shortly after midnight on Monday, Hamas admitted on its Telegram channel that it had fired mortar shells at IDF troops in the vicinity of Shifa Hospital.
Hamas is holding civilians, including medical staff, as human shields in Gaza’s Shifa Hospital while simultaneously targeting the medical institution, Israeli military officials reported on Sunday and Monday.

Reportedly, Hamas fired mortars at the hospital on Sunday.

During his Sunday evening public address, IDF spokesperson R.-Adm. Daniel Hagari stated, “Terrorists hiding around the hospital fired mortars at our forces, causing extensive damage to the hospital buildings. I repeat: Hamas is firing mortars at the Shifa hospital.”

Shortly after midnight on Monday, Hamas admitted on its Telegram channel that it had fired mortar shells at IDF troops in the vicinity of Shifa Hospital.

“Al-Qassam Brigades, in conjunction with the al-Quds Brigades, are attacking enemy forces penetrating the vicinity of al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City with mortar shells,” Hamas wrote.

Hagari added that the Gaza-based Islamist terror organization was destroying the hospital and had caused “extensive damage” to hospital infrastructure as it attempted to target IDF troops operating in the area.

According to the IDF spokesperson, one such attack had resulted in the hospital’s generator failing, after which Israeli forces helped to return electricity to the building.

Despite the damage caused to the hospital, Hagari stated that the thus-far six-day IDF operation in the area of Shifa Hospital, which has resulted in the elimination of 170 terrorists and the arrest of hundreds of others, has been one of the most successful since the start of the war.

More proof that Hamas uses human shields
“Our operation at Shifa Hospital proves once again: Hamas systematically uses hospitals to wage war and consistently uses the people of Gaza as human shields,” Hagari concluded.

The following morning, Maariv, citing estimates from IDF sources, reported that terrorists within the Shifa Hospital complex were likely holding civilians and medical staff as human shields.

In response, Israeli forces have reportedly escalated pressure on the hospital compound, urging those hiding within to come out to turn themselves in.

Maariv added that loud explosions were reportedly heard in the area.

Also, on Monday morning, the IDF published an update on the Israeli military's activities in Shifa Hospital and the Al Amal area.

According to the report, the IDF has arrested 500 terrorists in the area with affiliations to either Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

The IDF troops also recovered weapons in the area.

Separately, over the past day, during a sniper ambush on terrorist elements in central Gaza, IDF troops identified a terrorist entering and exiting a tunnel shaft nearby. An air strike immediately eliminated the terrorist.

The terrorist was among 20 reportedly killed by the IDF over the last day in either close-quarters combat confrontations or air strikes.

Additionally, over the same span, the Israeli air force struck around 50 targets throughout Gaza.

(New York Jewish Week) — Queens College’s Hillel chapter says recent graffiti on campus targeting Jews was a threat to student safety and demanded action from the college administration.

The graffiti on buildings around campus included the messages, “You better start hiding, Jews,” “Israelis, I’m coming after you,” and “Hitler, please come back. Teach Jews a lesson,” according to a statement released by the college’s Hillel director, Jenna Citron Schwab.

The statement, issued Thursday, said the college’s Jewish community had experienced similar threats previously and had been warning college leadership for weeks about escalating antisemitism on campus.

“The vandalism threatens the safety of Jews,” the statement said. “Antisemitism has no place on our campus or in any society.”

The Hillel demanded that the college call out antisemitism, take steps to enforce its code of conduct to prevent antisemitic vandalism and punish the perpetrators.

The college’s president, Frank Wu, sent a statement to the campus community on Thursday saying that “antisemitic graffiti” was found in several bathrooms and police were notified.

“Queens College stands strongly against religious intolerance, racism, sexism, and bigotry of any kind,” Wu said.

In a follow-up statement on Friday, Wu said that the NYPD had classified one instance of graffiti as a hate crime and the others as criminal mischief.

“Let me be clear: Antisemitism has absolutely no place on the Queens College campus,” Wu said.

A Queens College spokesperson told the New York Jewish Week that Wu meets often with Hillel representatives and that they are “working together to address antisemitism.”

Queens College has about 4,000 Jewish students, close to 30% of its student body of 13,510, according to Hillel international.

The NYPD told the New York Jewish Week it had received two reports of graffiti at Queens College on Wednesday, both inside a women’s bathroom. There were no descriptions available of suspects in the vandalism. Police said the Hate Crimes Task Force has been notified.

Queens College is part of the City University of New York system, the nation’s largest urban college network, which has a total of 226,000 students across its campuses. CUNY has grappled with allegations of antisemitism for years, and has taken measures to prevent the spread of anti-Jewish sentiment on campus, including through a partnership with the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

Tensions have been high at Queens College amid the Israel-Hamas war. A meeting between Muslim and Jewish students in November devolved into shouting. Muslim students at the meeting expressed support for Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror attack on Israel, which launched the war, and castigated an imam who organized the talk.

Wu spoke out against the school’s Muslim Students Association in November after the group denied Hamas atrocities. His criticism drew backlash from pro-Palestinian supporters on campus.
