George Washington Carver invented over 300 inventions from the peanut including coffee, dye and other inventions. I am giving George Washington Carver as an example of an African - American accomplishment. Just one person and over 300 inventions out of that one individual! What a wonderful blessing this man was to our nation and what he contributed to America! If I were going to do two the second would be Ben Carson whose inventions and discoveries have revolutionized neurosurgery and helped many, many people. Gospel music was first introduced by a black person too - so what is your point?

The noted African American inventor, Elijah McCoy was issued more than [URL='http://inventors.about.com/od/mstartinventors/ss/Elijah_McCoy.htm']57 patents for his inventions during his lifetime. His best known invention was a cup that fed lubricating oil to machine bearings through a small bore tube. Machinists and engineers who wanted genuine McCoy lubricators might have used the expression "the real McCoy."



Elijah McCoy - Biography
The inventor was born in 1843, in Colchester, Ontario, Canada. His parents were former slaves, George and Mildred McCoy (nee Goins) had fled Kentucky for Canada on the underground railroad.
George McCoy enlisted in the British forces, in return, he was awarded 160 acres of land for his service. When Elijah was three, his family moved back to the U.S., settling in Detroit, Michigan. He had eleven brothers and sisters.

In 1868, Elijah McCoy married Ann Elizabeth Stewart who died four years later. A year later, McCoy married his second wife Mary Eleanora Delaney. The couple had no children.

At the age of fifteen, Elijah McCoy served a mechanical engineering apprenticeship in Edinburgh, Scotland. Afterwards, he returned to Michigan to pursue a position in his field. However, the only job he found was that of a locomotive fireman and oiler for the Michigan Central Railroad. The fireman on a train was responsible for fueling the steam engine and the oiler lubricated the engine's moving parts as well as the train's axles and bearings. Because of his training, he was able to identify and solve the problems of engine lubrication and overheating. At that time, trains needed to periodically stop and be lubricated, to prevent overheating. Elijah McCoy developed a lubricator for steam engines that did not require the train to stop. His lubricator used steam pressure to pump oil wherever it was needed.

Meet Otis Boykin

Otis Boykin Inventor

Otis Boykin attended Fisk University and Illinois Institute of Technology (1946-47). He is responsible for inventing the electrical device used in all guided missles and IBM computers, plus 26 other electronic devices including a control unit for an artificial heart stimulator (pacemaker). He began his career as a laboratory assistant testing automatic controls for aircraft. One of Boykin's first achievements was a type of resistor used in computers, radios, television sets, and a variety of electronic devices. Some of his other inventions included a variable resistor used in guided missles, small component thick-film resistors for computers. The innovations in resistor design reduced the cost of producing electronic controls for radio and television, for both military and commercial applications. Other inventions by Otis Boykin also included a burglar-proof cash register and chemical air filter. He worked as a private consultant for several American firms and three Paris firms, from 1964 to 1982. Ironically, Otis Boykin, who invented a device to stimulate heart action, died in Chicago, Illinois of heart failure in 1982.

But you don't have anything to discuss. What have you found out about what blacks have contributed?

Ask me what confederate conservatives have contributed and the Nice list is very slim indeed. Ask me about the naughty list and it fills volumes. I don't even need research. I can give many example of both. What blacks have contributed and what confederate conservatives have added to the naughty list. Confederate conservative Nice? Not so much.
