I keep getting redirected to a somewhat similar, (but not the same) titled thread in the Politics forum.

Sometimes, when more than one thread is started on the same topic, the mods merge them into one thread. What you are describing is consistent with that—that the thread you are looking for was merged into another thread on the same topic, so when you try to go to the one thread, you're taken to the new merged thread.
