Mamdani Says City-Run Supermarket Will Be Ready In 3 Years

But Recommends Getting In Line For Bread Now

NEW YORK, NY — Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the city was going to spend a whopping $30 million on his city-run supermarket, with the project expected to take three years to build.
Still, he urged the citizens of New York not to wait for his experiment with Communism but to go ahead and get in line for bread now.
"Remember, we're not using evil capitalism for this," Mamdani told the press. "We're going to give goods like bread at a reasonable price. We just have to know how many people want that, so if everyone lined up now for us to get a count, maybe we can have that many loaves by 2029."
Mamdani said he hoped his supermarket would not only deal a blow to capitalism but also foster more community as people spend time together waiting in lines for sustenance.
"This is the way to do it," Mamdani said. "Sure, capitalism gets people goods cheaply and quickly, but it's at the expense of someone making a profit, which I just can't stand. So get in line for that sweet, sweet bread we'll eventually offer someday. While I can't guarantee you getting in line now means three years from now you'll definitely get bread, I can guarantee no capitalist will profit off you."
When questioned why his supermarket was going to cost way more than the average supermarket but also take longer to build, Mamdani chuckled, "I bet you're all thinking those millions will go to graft and cronies."
Reporters waited for a "but." It never came.
At publishing time, Mamdani had gone to the already-forming bread line at the future site of the market for a photo op.

Commentary:
Northerners and others moving from blue states to mine ticks me off to no end.
Instead of fixing their own they run away, squat here and reap the benefits of what we here have taken literally decades to build and they have absolutely NO skin in that game.
A joke yes but how much of the $30 million will end up stolen?
Ain’t Communism wonderful.

It's incredible to me how these people are incapable of learning and it's always people like Mamdani who have never had to work for a thing in their lives.

Three years? It should take six months. You pick up the phone and secure sponsors, sell ads, promote social awareness and operate not-for-profit. That is weak leadership and suggests that it is grift-driven,

/----/ Why $30 million dollars? Why two years? Mamdani won't have to buy or rent land, pay inspection fees or permits, or pay corporate taxes, so why so much money?

In New York City, the cost to open a supermarket varies dramatically depending on the scale and location, ranging from $150,000 for a small neighborhood shop to over $6 million for a full-scale supermarket.
  • Real Estate & Rent: Commercial retail rents in high-traffic areas can exceed $150 per square foot for union-built spaces. Most landlords require 3–6 months of rent upfront as a security deposit.
  • Construction & Outfitting: * Commercial Refrigeration: This is often the single largest equipment expense, typically starting at $35,000 for a basic setup.
    • HVAC & Utilities: Energy costs for refrigeration and lighting average around $1.50 – $2.10 per square foot.
  • Inventory: Initial stock to fill shelves generally requires $80,000 to $200,000 in liquid capital before doors open.
  • Permits & Licensing: While a standard NYC Food Service Establishment Permit costs roughly $280, specialized licenses like liquor permits can add thousands and involve lengthy wait times.

Store TypeSquare FootageEstimated Startup Cost
Small/Corner Store~1,000 sq ft$100,000 – $200,000
Medium Independent~3,000 sq ft$300,000 – $600,000

Mamdani is not the president.

Find somebody else to hate.

So do you know what the average profit margin of a grocery store in NYC is?? its 1 - 3 percent.

These stores also have to pay property taxes and rent, which the CITY stores will not..
They stand to undercut other grocery stores , so there are some critics .

"Debates over food deserts aside, Mamdani has already anticipated some pushback from his critics who say government-run grocery stores won't work.

"My answer to them is simple," he said. "I look forward to the competition. May the most affordable grocery store win."

But, by definition, the government-owned grocery store would not actually foster competition because it would be largely insulated from price signals and subsidized by taxpayers. "
