If the dems win the Senate, they will certain make significant changes but making the GOP extinct, not going to happen. The fact is voters can not stomach either political party for very long because the longer a party is in control the further to left or right it pushes the country which is basically centralist. Eventfully voter decide enough is enough. Also, no matter how far we advance, there will always be those that want to turn back to recapture the country as use to be.

However, I do believe that there are long term trends in the world that will force changes in the US that favor dems. Trends such as increased multilingualism, merging of cultures and races, faster communications and travel, increases in international trade, growth of international businesses, ever increasing population migration, increased dependence on other nations, expansion of human rights to include food, shelter, and healthcare are not in keeping with typical conservative values.
