We need to change tipping culture

Eat at home cheapskate...

It's simple.

If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out.

Because I have worked as a bartender, I didn't mind if someone was strapped for cash from time to time, only the chronic cheapskates got on my nerves.

I genuinely enjoy pleasantly surpriseing a hard working young person for trying.

Finally, after I got a very good haircut this morning, I ended up tipping 200% for a $17.00 haircut through a miscommunication but young person was so delighted that I didn't have the heart to correct things.

You can't take it with you.....

And...

If it weren't for the kindness of strangers, I wouldn't be here.

If you want to be seated by a hostess, and have your order taken and food brought to your table by a server who smiles and introduces themselves and checks frequently to see if you need anything, well you're gonna need to dust off your wallet and tip.
One more reason for me not to tip, then, cause I hate that crap. They always come by once every three seconds or so, asking if I need anything, do I need a refill of my glass...etc. Which I can't really blame them for, because they think this is what customers want and what will get them good tips. But sometimes, I just want to be left alone so I enjoy my food in peace. This is one major reason that I have pretty much stopped going to restaurants.

Exactly! Let's stop going through restaurants as the appropriate respons. Going to restaurants and not tipping. It is completely inappropriate. I recently got my oil changed. I didn't particularly like the way they did it, but I paid it anyway. And the next time went to a different place. Or I could have changed my own oil.

Your solution is simple: Eat at restaurants where workers are paid at least minimum wage and where tipping is not expected.

I highly recommend two in particular: Whataburger (mainly Texas I believe) and Chick-fil-a.

At Chick-fil-a, you will get friendly and respectful service from staff who are trained to respond in specific ways to customers. I've never had someone be rude to me at Chick-fil-a.* The only downside is their very limited menu of different shapes of the same fried chicken filets, i.e. sandwich, wrap, strips or nuggets or grilled versions of the same thing.

At Whataburger there is a much wider variety of foods, with most of the entres being cooked to order. The staff is mostly friendly, though not as ritually friendly as the youngsters at Cfa.

Both of those will very often bring the food to your table, with a system of plastic markers so they know which customer is which.

If you want to be seated by a hostess, and have your order taken and food brought to your table by a server who smiles and introduces themselves and checks frequently to see if you need anything, well you're gonna need to dust off your wallet and tip. Minimum of 20%, and I mean even if the service sucked. The only exception would be if the server were rude and/or disrespectful, in which case you should cancel your order and go elsewhere, after complaining to management.

Why do I say tip 20% even in the case of poor service? Because poor service is nearly always a result of the restaurant being understaffed, or a mistake like asking for your steak well-done and the cook misunderstood how well-done you meant, or some kind of mixup. I make mistakes on my job, but my pay is not docked each time. The server still did the work.

If you choose to go to sit down restaurant and not tip the customary amount, you are stealing that person's work, or more correctly defrauding them with your implied agreement to follow that custom.

As to any ideas of a system of not tipping, that would eliminate the excellent service I always insist on when treating Mrs. Flops to dinner. I gladly pay for the upgraded service as I do for the upgraded food. Americans are not born to serve others, so it costs money to get them to do so.

Pay up, or enjoy your Red Baron Pizza while watching PBS.
Or simply cook at home.

Not sure why you got triggered. Do both your mother and sister work as waitresses?

I'll ask them.

But I already know that both of them have more class than to go on a message board and talk about someone's family.

You have the gall to accuse me of having no class, when you are the one who wrote some snarky-ass, sarcastic shit, to people sharing their genuine feelings about their experience.

And the females in your family having class? I highly doubt it, judging by the way you shit-talk on message boards to strangers, I wouldn't be surprised that they worked as straight-up prostitutes. Waitresses are too classy for the bitches you share your filthy, degraded blood with. You ******* cuckold.

I have no idea which post you mean, but if you will let me know I'll look at it. And if what you say is correct I will certainly apologize.

At this point, I'd have to recommend that you take a break from this message board.

Perhaps an extended break.

In case you aren't being sarcastic (again), what I said in that post is that I hate the fact that waitresses keep asking me how I am doing and stuff like that. They think they are providing a good service, but to me, it's really bothersome. I just want to be left alone so I can enjoy my food.

I don't think I am the only one who hates to have to answer someone's incessant questions when her mouth is full of food.

Nah. How else can I freely spew my hate without being dragged off to a psych ward again? Lol.

Okay, but what did i say to trigger such a vile post and lead you to also send a PM in case your hateful post got deleted?

I understand that part. What you want is a server who doesn't bother you, but will be at your table quickly if you look around or raise your finger.

Unfortunately, these days to get that you really have to go to the high end restaurants.

I'm sure the servers who constantly check on you have been complained about by customers who wanted their coffee cup refilled five f'in' times et cetera.

By the way, if you are implying that you are female, then your post makes much more sense as well as your sending me a pm to make sure that I saw it.

Fair enough!

It's not what you said, it's the fact that you were being sarcastic. And for no good reason. I think my post was normal/quite reasonable. I was just sharing my experience at restaurants. You don't have to agree with me, but you shouldn't get all sarcastic, either.

See, this is why people like you deserve "vile posts".

I never once said I expect waiters to come to my table quickly. Not once. Never implied, either. You are just imaging these nasty things about other people, making assumptions about them, because that's what you are all about.

Not that I care about what you think of me at all but, yes, I hate it when waitresses bother me. And I also don't expect them to come to my table quickly. I don't expect them to change, either. So, what do I do? That's right, I change. I am the one who changes. I change from going out to eat, to not going out to eat. Because I understand that there are things in life that one just cannot fight about.

Hmm, not sure what you are trying to say here, sir? Are you implying that women are naturally nasty human beings? Because you realize that if I were nasty, it could just be me, it's not an indictment of the entire female species, right? Why are you such a hateful, generalizing sexist pig, sir?

Btw, I sent you a PM not because I am a nasty woman (although I actually am, but it's irrelevant here). I sent it to you because I know from (ample) experience that excessively hateful posts sometimes get deleted. I wanted to make sure you read my vile vitriol, heheheh.
Fair enough!

Im going to bow out of this exchange. I'd preder to avoid an outcome like this:

Care to explain what the "outcome" that you are afraid this might lead to? I don't watch vids. I am also not violent or anything, if that's what you're suggesting.

Went into a Waffle House for carry out. Sign said "20% gratuity will be added to all carry out orders".

Walked right back out again. Here's your 20% of nothin'.

Turn a tablet around for making a sandwich? Sorry. No.

But, if I go sit and eat at a restaurant and the server is refilling drinks and checking on us from time to time... they're getting at least 20%.

Yeah, I would have, too.

I'm not interested in helping to normalize anyone's entitlement models.

How bout we do this?
No tips above 10 percent. A tip is just a nice addition to the meal to acknowledge a pleasant server or service above and beyond normal. Tip based on the performance of the server, not the price of the meal.
Server does not work harder to deliver a prime steak or a burger and fries

But tipping culture is out of hand. Tips start at 20 percent and it is the customer responsible for the livelihood of the server. Leaving a bad tip is taking food out of the mouths of their family. I am already paying for the food, restaurant rent, advertising, insurance, taxes…….why am I expected to pay the salary of someone who works for YOU?
You cheap friggn jooo...

I tip everybody
In Brooklyn even the grocery store baggers have a Lil tip cup out

Stay in NJ

.

Great idea to rely on the concierge for such information.

I have never been one who traveled internationally, except to Canada and one trip to Northern England. I don't recall tipping protocol in England because my hosts treated for all meals out and hotel stays.

.
Generally, we don't tip in the UK. You will see a jar or cup on the counter in restaurants etc.. for staff tips, but I rarely put anything in. In the days of paying cash, if a bill was £98, you probably left £100. With cards these days, some machines have a tip function, which I decline, and in fact, most staff hit decline before you put your card in.

The two biggest tips I know of was a Manhattan waitress been given a lottery ticket as a tip, it won $6 million, so she halved it with the guy that gave it to her. And in 1922, Einstein didn't have any cash on him in Tokyo to give as a tip, so he scribbled out a note and said it'll be worth something one day. It sold in 2017 for $1.56 million.

At many establishments, the tips are shared with other staff such as bus persons, dishwashers, and cooks.
If the quality of the food isn't to yopur satisfaction, the waitperson had little to do with that, it usually be the cook and/or restaurant policies.

Tipping culture in the U.S is nothing short of businesses wanting to offload the responsibility of paying their associates to the public.
If there was no tipping and the firm was paying what you think they should to staff, you would see the "tip" in increased prices.
This is notable where minimum wages have been doubled and to survive in business, that burger that used to cost $2 is now $4+.
